Personally I think this unit is a bit gimmicky..the price...the location of product is in hong kong..you might get what you pay for...I might save for something you will be proud of...I don't think there is any short cut to gps. There is a thread that a guy used his palm and made a great gps out it on the cheap.
Just my thoughts...which at last glance didn't mean much.

I have a GPS setup on my PDA which works fine for my needs. It cost about $300 for PDA, GPS receiver, and software. GPS receiver is a small device about 1/3-1/2 the size of a pack of smokes. The PDA connects to it via Bluetooth.

No, the map data and software is stored on the PDA either on the onboard memory or on a CF or SD card.
The GPS receiver receives GPS signals from sattellites and then sends out data in NEMA format via Bluetooth to the PDA. The software on the PDA takes this data and uses it to plot your location on the map.
Currently I am using iGuidance software from iNav Corp. My PDA is a Dell Axim X50v (discontinued a year or two ago) and my GPS receiver is a GlobalSat BT-338.
