Gen5 components crossovers (boxes)

i know most decent component sets should come with external crossover boxes to filter sound 4 the tweeters n midranges/midbass drivers.

my question is, do those crossovers prevent bass frequencies 80Hz or lower from playing thru the mids?

sorry man, i dont have any in mind yet. im guessin only the more expensive sets have good crossover options.

but dont most new amps have variable high-pass settings? that might solve the problem too?

The crossovers with the component set should just split the upper frequencies to the tweeters and the lower frequencies to the midrange. To keep the bass out you will need another crossover but that will be the variable or at least adjustable high pass on the amp.

oh i didnt realize you didnt have the comp set yet. some of the higher end comp sets have adjustable XO's. i believe if your amp has a built in XO, that will override the XO. do you have a HU yet? some HU's have digital XO's built in where you can set it all from there.

i have an Alpine HU with the iPod control. unfortunately, it's last year's model. i believe this year's Alpines, u can choose XO points from the HU. what a convenience that is!

what i was trying to get at was, trying to make sure that midrange drivers play within a frequency range. for example, the passive XO's that come with a component set wuld filter out the highs. then, an amp with a variable active XO would filter out the lows (say, 80Hz and lower).

oh ok i gotcha.. well, most, if not all component sets will come with a XO that will send the correct frequencies to the correct speakers if thats what you are getting at..

Thats not quite true. IF you use the passive crossovers and try to go active....it would cancel each other out and make a different setting. In order to properly use the HU's xovers you need to remove the passive ones. PAssive xover blocks are tailored by the manufacturer but can be really limited as diffferent cars give diffedrent acoustics, that is why many people go active(besides the fact that they can choose how they want to hear their own speakers). THe passive crossovers is basically an active, excpet for the fact that the manufacturere selects what slopes and such are best, and sets them in stone, so you the user wont have to do anything. AS far as filtering out low frequencies from the mid bass, you would need an external xover that doesn't interferre with the passioves settings.
