Custom Boxes

Ive been searching around online for the last hour and im not seeing any great DIY's on custom box construction ...

i read one decent one here on TN for fiberglass, but since i have no experience with fiberglass it wasnt nearl enough info

first of all, should i go with:
1) just a plain MDF box with carpet or paint exterior?
2) fiberglass-covered MDF box?
3) MDF box with Plexiglass window?

and second of all, should i go with ported or sealed? i care about quality, but no so much that a 300W sub isnt loud

im trying to figure out the best way to get a $300+ system to fit nicely in my Gen 3 Camry sedan [not taking up too much space] ...

well, a lot of it is all personal choice. You first need to go to your subwoofers manufacturer and find out what the recomeneded size of the enclosure needs to be (how many cubic feet) and then you need to decide how much space you have to work with. If you have the space, you can make a simple MDF box and carpet it. Making a sealed box is a lot easier than a ported one as the length of the port makes a big difference in the sound. If you are limited on space, you may want to consider going full fiberglass as it will ouline the most available space. The big custom setups that look like they are fully molded to take up the whole trunk often have an mdf base, but then again they aren't really pressed for space.

Crutchfield is running a great promotion with the Infinity Basslink II. It's pretty compact but still gets the job done, and I need as much space as I can in the back. I'm probably going to order it Friday, if you wanna wait around I can let you know how it turns out.

^see the problem with that is that it looks so boring ... i feel like if im going to spend $300+ on a sub system, it should at least look like a sub system

I see what you're saying but like I said, I don't have the space. I just ordered it, hopefully it'll arrive early next week.

Just a plain MDF box with whatever you want on it would be probably the easiest in terms of DIY... so that probably is the best option..

Also I'd really like to know what your going to put together for $300...

You really are not going to have alot of options.. but i'll give my suggestion.

Mach5 Audio 10 or 12 and a Blaupunkt VA2200

That would be fairly inexpensive.

Bu then again there are several other sub choices that are cheap

Also sealed would be your best option.. unless you want a pidly 3db increase.. go ported

Get a plain MDF box instead. then follow the ported design shown in the manual included in your subwoofer.
