Used Late Model Camry Warning

Be aware when buying a late model Toyota if it has an engine Immoblizer Anti-Theft System. If so, make sure the dealer has spare keys. I found, after purchase, they could not find spares, that losing the sole key would require a $1500 cost for a new computer on the car, and that spare transponder keys run $60-$120 per KEY, depending on where you go. I bought the spares, and am dealing with the situtation thru State Attn General's Office. But: SAVE YOURSELVES GRIEF; FIND OUT FIRST.

Well........if u lose all the keys i think ur screwed (even on the new cars) cause u need at least one old key to program ur new key(s).

I'm sure they can reset the computer though, instead of replacing it.

Keys

right, but on a new car they have to give you at least 2 keys. I woman's story on the Internet I read, with another manufaturer, was that she, as we all can, ended up losing one key, then a few months later, the other. Expecting, like me, they were regualr old keys, she contacted the dealer thinking she'd pay a few bucks for a copy from their master. Instead, she was told there were no masters, and the charge would be $3000 to put a new computer in. With the help of the local "Action Reporter" she was finally able to arrange some deal with the maufacturer, but it was a long-lasting nightmare for her, during which she had no car. So, the advice stands : late model used car buyers: ASK if there's a buit-in Engine Immobilizer. If so, make sure there are SPARES.

On the new Camry 02 and 03 with the engine imobilizer, even if you loose all the keys, they can wipe the computer and reprogram it for new key.
