Kenwood D707 / M707 question (in Caldina G)

I've just picked up a Caldina G (ex-Japan). Can't see which main forum these are discussed in here - I know it goes by the monikers Avensis, Caldina, Corona, and Premio too.

Anyway, whatever the name, it has a nice looking Kenwood dual-DIN stereo. There's a D-707 and an M-707, the M707 is a CD player and the D707 is a minidisc/receiver. D707 is supposed to be the amp/power source etc.

M707 responds to the eject/face slide button only. The D707 doesn't do anything for any buttons, but I extracted the units and the power is fed thru the D707 to the M707.

It's not the fuses, I checked and the power is good throughout. I suspect the face controls, because the unit really seems unresponsive to buttons, but sounds like it powers on (whirring when power reconnected/disconnected).

Has anyone seen a Kenwood behave like this? Any thoughts on how I might be able to resurrect a nice looking stereo before I start blowing cash on it?

Also, it came with four nice matching Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01s. These are ice tyres, which is handy when I do hit the snow, but mostly I'm driving on dirt or paved roads. Is this a cause for concern?

Cheers all!
