hey im new to this forum and just thought maybe someone can help me out.... i have a kamelion stereo or however u spell it and and 3 way explodes all the way around..... i just recently bought two 12 JL audio subs and now need a amp and pointers on what amp i should get........so anyones help will b appreciated.
what i have is a US Acoustics USX-2080. i think its somewhere around 280w RMS. it pounds the subs pretty damn well, its dirt cheap (around $100 US) and the power is very very clean for what you are getting. i would reccommend this amp highly. it has worked without flaw for me so far, but of late i find myself longing for more power... anyways, its a great starter amp.

I'm not positive, but I think you can push around 300W to a 12W0. The figures they give are their recommended numbers. If you look at the sheet that came with the sub there's a little scale ranging from something like "Acceptable" to "Danger Zone" (seriously, it says that). The guys at work regularly set up amps in the danger zone. Like this camry was just in that had I think a 12w7 in a ported JL box and they hooked up a 1000/1 amp to it. Those w7s aren't rated for 1000W, but I guess they've never had any problems at the store running that high.
It can potentially void the warranty on the sub, though. You should probably talk to a JL dealer before messing around with pushing past the limit, too. If you want, I can ask at the store tomorrow and see what a decent amp for that would be.
Edit: JL 12w7 suggested wattage per mfgr is 700W. So I was way off.
still browsing around reading up on them..... i just wanna do things write and not blow them..... so heres a question i read somewhere that Maximun Power Handling 350 watts each sub so thats 700 watts together. Does that mean i can buy a 500 watt amp and bump them hard and still b safe
When you look at the amps, just don't look at the numbers that's printed on them, as they usually imply a lower impedance. That's how manufacturers "trick" consumers into believing getting so much power out. Since your 12W0-8 subs are rated at 8-ohms each, when you wire them in parallel, you will get a 4-ohm load. Also, the W0's are only rated for 125-W each, so 250-W for both. If you get an amp that is around 300-W @ 4-ohm load rating, then you are good to go. You can always adjust the gain so to not clip the amp.
Maximum power handling is only present in case of transient music burst. That doesn't mean you should feed 350-W continously each to full excursion. You will separate the spider and/or fry the voice coil.
thnx, thnx alot that last message helpd me.... though i must bug with another question.... now brands whats a good brand that wont go wrong on me... or should i spend the extra buck and get JL amp?
Everyone has his/her own favorite brand, so it depends somewhat on past experience. JL amps are good, but there are other good brands too. It will come down to preference. But just remember to read the ratings carefully, and not have a salesperson talk around you into confusion. A "good" amp would be something like 1-W/$1.
Even for lower powered amps it's still a little much. Let's see, you can get a Hifonics Brutus 1500 watt amp (highly recommended on caraudio.com forums) for under $300 after S&H off ebay from good sellers. That's like 5W/$1. Granted, with better known brands you would get a lesser ratio. I think something in your power range (up to 300w RMS) should go for about 2W/$1.
