Which is what I was refering to. If the independences on the speakers are not 4ohm then yea.. obviously its not going to be right. I didnt notice a real big difference when I did it on my Camry, and I have the 2ohm JBL front speakers.

The HU I used was the Alpine 9813 with all kinds of x/o settings,EQ'ing .etc.,messed with all the settings and could't get it to sound half way decent.Like I said it didn't work for me,my experience ,my $.02
Who's assuming?...I speak from experience, when I 1st got my 02 Camry I Installed a Alpine HU and left the stock speakers in. The speakers sounded distorted like they couldn't handle the extra power from the new HU.Stock speakers & HU are engineered to work for that particular vehicle, take one out of the equation & you'll hear the difference.Unless you have high end stock speakers(Mark Levinson,Dynaudio ,etc.)then maybe you can get away with a aftermarket HU,anything less I wouldn't bother with.
I would not see a problem if the speakers were new... some of the surrounds are made of that foam crap so they fall apart if the get more that a couple of watts the the head unit puts out. If the HU performs at a diffrent freqz and hertz than the speakers can put out or allow it will sound like crap. But i would not think that it is a bad thing for every car...
damn i'm stuck, still looking for a double din player, and still not sure what the ohms on the speakers are. aren't they standard? anyone with an avalon that knows?
I can't look at the avalon because it's hours away. any suggestions on double dins? or anybody with a stock cd player?

I agree every car is different, experimentation has the final word.I've been thru so many setups it's not even funny. An aftermarket HU & stocks spkers didn't do it for me.Maybe I'm not looking hard enuff but I have not see car audio enthusiasts who really care about how their system sound with stock spkrs w/ aftermarket HU's.Unless ur someone that doesn't care about SQ then go ahead hook that HU up & if ur happy with it then that's all that matters.

off topic- yay for my 1000th post!! i will have a *WW* later tonight because i hit my 1000th post here at work lol
on topic- i think for someone who has never had an aftermarket system, a basic aftermarket HU with the stock speakers is a good way to start. thats how i started.. i first got an aftermarket HU and powered the stock speakers with with it. then i decided to get component speakers and a 4 ch amp.. then i moved up by adding a sub, bridging the rear channels of the 4 ch amp... then bought a mono amp to power the sub, along with upgrading the wiring with a power distribution block. later on i bought a in dash flip out dvd player. changed cars, put all that stuff in my new car and i just upgraded again to a double din kenwood dvd unit..
bottom line, as you progress in your car audio ventures, you will learn on your own what a good system sounds like and IMO upgrading little by little is a great way to learn..
Definitely a YMMV... I pout a Pioneer head unit in my '07 SE (non-JBL) and the sound is better than stock (being able to fine-tune it with the EQ doesn't hurt). On the other hand, I know that if I turn the volume up all the way I'm probably going to overpower the speakers, and it won't sound so good anymore.
I agree with MrSo0h0o... try your head unit with the stock speakers and see how they sound. This usually works better on stock stereo setups that are not the 'premium' set (JBL with Toyota, but also like Acuras with the Bose system or Fords with the Mach sound system), as many of those systems have amps or equalizers either built into the head unit or wired in-between the head unit and the speakers.
I will say this though... I did the same thing has MrSo0h0o with my old car... got the head unit, then the components, then amped the components... it's addicting and with the right setup it's worth the cost and effort for the sound quality you get (was worth it for me anyway).
If you try the stock speakers and decide you need to upgrade, try to plan out your system... how much do you want to spend, do you want to be able to upgrade later, etc. You don't have to spend that much to get a good setup going, and planning everything out and doing it once beats having to go back and re-do something later (mostly referring to running wires, but you get the idea).
yeah i'm guessing you gotta look at how much you wanna spend for a HU. For my sister though, she just wants the basic capabilities and a stock look. That's why I opted for a double din player, but for my budget, I couldn't find one.
I might end up getting her a ipod and FM transmitter since her radio still works...
