Hey, my sis 00 Avalon needs a new headunit since the CD player broke. It ejects CDs everytime one is put in without any error messages. I've never messed with her car but what would be a good headunit to keep that factory look, but with mp3 capabilities?
Also, wiring wise....is it tough or plug and play? As far as money goes, something around $100 is good
I'd say get one from a Scion that has MP3 capability because decks from newer cars with MP3 are not going to be regular double din size and may not fit in the Avalon dash. I don't know what the 00 Avalon dash looks like, but I assume it is unlike the newer cars where the stereo won't fit any other car.
are you willing to install it for her? i have an older pioneer DEH-5500MP that plays mp3 CD's.. color scheme is green and white.. not sure what the color scheme of the avalon is.. let me know and i will post pics
If u have stock speakers the sound will change if u go aftermarket & not for the better.
is that true? i thought it would get better with a new HU. But anyway, I've never installed a HU before so I have no idea how to do it. I've seen the big huge plug behind my CD player in my Camry. So i'm thinking it's the same?
The color scheme in the avalon is green and white also. i'd like something that's double din as you said.
well, these are the two HU's that i have that i can part with:
here is my current setup thats in my car right now..
eclipse AV8022 in dash dvd unit
unit installed in my older car:
and here is the pioneer.. its currently just sitting in my drawer waiting for a buyer lol
the pioneer is much easier to install.. the eclipse has a separate brain for its AV connections.. but i read that u wanted an OEM look so im not sure either of these would work out for you.. but just let me know
Yea ... I dont know where you came up with that assumption but.... not true.
Who's assuming?...I speak from experience, when I 1st got my 02 Camry I Installed a Alpine HU and left the stock speakers in. The speakers sounded distorted like they couldn't handle the extra power from the new HU.Stock speakers & HU are engineered to work for that particular vehicle, take one out of the equation & you'll hear the difference.Unless you have high end stock speakers(Mark Levinson,Dynaudio ,etc.)then maybe you can get away with a aftermarket HU,anything less I wouldn't bother with.
I posted a little info below on why keeping the factory speakers and changing the head unit may in fact lead to worse sound in some cases. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t203074.html

Some JBL systesm I've seen use 2 Ohm speakers and that is not recommended if you change head units because they are typically designed to work with 4 Ohm speakers.

ah what do you recommend? a replacement for the HU for the avalon would be about $150 or so i'm guessing. Would the Scion's HU fit the avalon's? The reason for not just getting a replacement is because well, the stock Avalon HU is just a single cd player, non-mp3.
