Pioneer AVIC-D1 screen dead? halp?

weird and wacky situation happened today. none of the buttons on my D1 would work, and the touch screen seemed "locked," so i turned the car off and back on. this got the touch screen responding, but the buttons still wouldn't work. drove for about 10 minutes and things started to fry...literally. smelled and saw smoke starting to come out from the lower corner of the faceplate area.

now, obviously, the screen is fried. it will still display, but it won't do anything else. the remainder of the unit works fine, though i can't eject my CD. the OS boots. what can be done to resolve this? it's been in the car for at least a year and a half, if not 2 years, so it's well out of warranty. would it be reasonable to try to find a unit with a functioning screen and just replace that part, or should i just try to get a whole new unit? will the brain work with any other D1, or are they married?

thanks for any and all help.

hrmm, that's a tough one. I thought the D1 didn't have easily replaceable screens. You could try doing a full reset on the unit. I forget the proper way, but if i remember correctly, there is a pioneer avic forum out there that should be able to give you some advice. I've also been told that the D1 screen had some flaws in it's design that slowely, overtime, lost it's touch response in areas eventualy resulting in total touch loss.

thanks for your suggestion but that doesn't explain why i smelled burning. i don't think doing a full system reset would fix it, either, since it's apparent to me the face essentially shorted out.

the fuse to the deck is intact, so i know that's not the problem. blah. i guess i'll be forced to get a whole new unit.

next question: would the D3 unit work with the brain from the D1?

The D3 doesn't have a brain. Hide-away brains are a thing of the past.
