My amp shuts down when i raise the gain high or the volume on my deck high and i don't know why. I have 4 gauge wire for the ground and the amp is only rated at 280watt rms whereas im using it to push a 700watt rms sub...is it maybe becuase its not getting enough power or what? Any help would be appreciated.
Trev
Edit: I don't ever max out the gain on the amp or the volume on the deck.

Do you have 4-gauge for power also? You didn't state it. If not, definitely use the same gauge for power and ground. You shouldn't have to use 4-gauge for a 280-W amp, 8-gauge should be plenty. The conductivity of the power cable may have deteriorated also, so you can try and replace that, since it'd be cheaper compared to replacing battery and/or alternator.
My power wire is 8 gauge but it would cost me about 100$ to replace it with 4 gauge. It should also be in very good condition considering i just bought it a month ago. The amp is made for 2 and 4 ohm loads so it should be fine. My sub is wired for 2 ohms i believe but im not sure??? If you need info bout the sub its an Audiobahn AW1200Q sub.

You should definitely use 4-gauge power, or 8-gauge ground. The current is sinking faster due to the 4-gauge ground, and not enough sourcing due to the 8-gauge power cable. It should not cost you $100 to swap to 4-gauge power, since they typically run about $2/ft. If you get about 16 ft, that's only $32. You can also get something like the Monster Cable 500-W amp kit, which includes 4-gauge power & ground, remote turn on, etc., all other parts needed to completely run an amp, for about $70.
where i live 8 gauge runs for 2$ a foot and 4 gauge runs for 5$ a foot...i need 20 feet of it...thers my 100$. as for the having power sinking problem it happened b4 i upgraded the ground as well so its not that.
It still sounds like the 8-gauge power isn't getting enough current to the amp. My friend had a similar situation in his (bigger) amp, JL 500/1, his 8-gauge power couldn't handle the current flow. Once he switched to 4-gauge power & ground, all is well. He even told me his 8-gauge melted, afterwards.
ok well my 8 gauge is only carrying a max of 500 watts or so i think...so it should be fine. If i have that problem after i get a cap and a battery maybe ill upgrade...if you can think of anything else it could be let me know!

just because wire costs alot does not make it the best. i run nothing but knukonceptz wiring in my car. ive used the same 15 foot run of 1/0 gauge for at least a year and a half. aside from flexability, you probably couldnt find a difference between that and monster or stinger wires.
