DIY Alarm Install on a 3rd gen?

Does anyone have experience with installing their own alarm on a 3rd gen? I have an electronics background (4th year of my Bachelors of Computer Engineering), but I was supprised to see the wiring mess behind my glove box. Wow toyota. Way to cram 3000 ft of wiring into my dash .

I was curious if someone would be willing to give me a hand here finding the ignition wires.. I have not gone as far as ripping the top part of my dash off to find out where the wires go from the actual switch, but I have found the relay block and such.

I also need pointers on where to hook up the other leads. Thanks.

Aw yea.. Getting there.

Anyone know specifically what the ignition harness looks like, or where I can find it. It seems pretty tight on the drivers side.

Better leave the job to an EE instead.

If you remove the steering column, you will find the ignition, accessory, and constant 12V wire harness, all are 12-gauge wires, you can't miss it. What you see behind the glovebox are wire bundles to/from the ECU, I'd leave that alone unless the wiring identification says it needs to be tapped there. Most wires are located near the driver's kick panel. You may need to diode isolate the two lock wires, one for regular lock, one for child safety.

I've installed an Alarm & Remote Start on mine, and already have the lower part of the dash apart anyway, so if no one relies before then, I'll take a picture for ya and post it tomorrow.

BTW: I spent a year in college doing Electrical Engineering, and another year doing Computer Networking....

Heres a wiring diagram that i've scanned:

The wiring diagram says 1995 Camry, but the wiring is the same for all gen 3's. So ignore the 1995.

The wires listed for the door lock / unlock is wrong. I forget which one is wrong, but one of them is wrong. So use a dmm to find the right wire.

Disclaimer: Wiring diagram is only for information. What you do with it is your problem. If your car catches on fire, etc.... due to your ignorance about car electrical systems its your fault.
