4th Generation sub placement question(camry)

i have a 99 le camry and i'm prolly going to build new box to go where the seats fold down in the back and make it a stealth install sorta.

but should i have the sub(s) pointing into the back of the back seats(facing forward) or into the trunk?

i'm looking for good sound quality. i havent decided on a sub yet but i'm in no hurry because its getting cold. I wont be doing anything till spring.

thanks

a lot of people do it facing towards the back but then others towards the front, i would just go for the standard backwards facing or if you can try it facing both ways first and see how it sounds

I guess it depends on what type of subwoofer you're using, but I'd say facing toward the trunk

yes, in our sedans (and most other cars), facing backwards is best. i went one step further. I have a 12" alpine sub in a small sealed box. im facing it backwards and the box is placed in the rear corner of the car. it works much better than when i tried it against the rear seats, facing backwards.

thank you very much. i thought i read that article before but i couldnt find it.

one question though.

The pictures above are showing a 60Hz wavelength and the bounce distance to reflect back out of phase a complete 180 degrees is just over 4 ft

In summary I found:
1. box at front of trunk speakers aiming forward or up through the rear deck = poor in car bass response, much better with trunk open.
2. box at front of trunk speakers aiming backward = better in car bass response by far, slightly better with trunk open.
3. box at back of trunk with speakers aiming forward = better in car bass, no difference with trunk open.
4. box at back of trunk with speakers aiming backward = best in car bass response and gets less bass with trunk open.

it kinda sounds like a contradiction to me(i prolly misunderstood something) but it says the best is four feet facing backward but then 4. says you want it in the back of your trunk.

So my question is do i want it all the way in the back of my trunk or 4 feet away?

I think you just misunderstood a bit (in the first statement he was referring to the distance it took for that 60 hz wave to be 180 degrees "out" of phase). As with most things in car audio there are going to be trade-offs. Some people are not willing to give up all of the trunk space so putting the enclosure all the way to the rear is impractical. As someone above mentioned, decide what you are willing to give up and then experiment based on those findings to see what works best for you

ok thanks i didnt catch that

do you think it matters if its off to one side and not in the middle?(i wouldnt think so but just wondering)

(back to putting in the middle where the cabin and trunk meet)and if i seal the sub off from the trunk but keep the seats up would i still get bad cancelation/reflection. what if i cut a hole behind the back armrest and keep that down?

also Mr.Marv are you the one that can make baffles for people? if so how much?

Thanks

My suggestion is to experiment whenever possible as there are no set in stone rules for every vehicle. I have had great success with the sub in the middle behind the armrest and you are correct that you should seal it off from the trunk. BTW, if you are going to do all that work you may want to consider infinite baffle

Almost forgot, yes I do make the baffles and cost depends on what you need. You can email or give me a call at 1-831-383-0308 but no PM's please as they are hard to keep track of on all the forums.
