4th Generation Do i really need a Wire Harness?

i just bought a Pioneer Cd player for my 2000 camry and i want to install it by myself. but do i really need the wire Harness to install it? can i just plugin the existing wire to the Pioneer player? If i have to get the wire harness do you think $6 wire harness from ebay is good enough or do i need to buy the expensive ones?

I'm also looking for Dash Pocket also and i don't know where to get it.

please help

Thanks

Many places sell dash pockets, retailers such as Best Buy or Fry's Electronics should have them. Otherwise most online audio shops and eBay should have it as well.

As for the wire harness, I'm not sure on that part.

I would definitely go with a wiring harness. It will simplify the job. You don't NEED one but it's money well spent.

I think the $6 one from eBay would work fine. You might want to check Crutchfield also. I don't think they're much more expensive there.

Buying a wiring harness allows you to plug-in the existing car wiring harness to the Pioneer unit. The wiring harness is basically an adaptor for each manufacturer or make/model of car. All the harnesses that come with decks are universal, the harness that you need to buy for your car changes the pioneer harness from universal to car specific. That wiring harness is 'mated' the the Pioneer harness which then plugs into your car's harness. This way your car's harness is not tampered with. If you didn't use a harness you would need to 'hardwire' it.

This means that the plug is cut off to expose the wires, then you would need to find each wire;

12v+ constant,
12v+ switch,
- Ground,
Front Right - Speaker,
Front Right + Speaker,
Front Left - Speaker,
Front Left + Speaker,
Rear Right - Speaker,
Rear Right + Speaker,
Rear Left - Speaker,
Rear Right + Speaker.

Instead, spending (approx.) $17 at BestBuy or FutureShop is pocket change when you have the piece of mind that your car's wiring hasn't been tampered with especially if you're planning on doing it yourself. Each of those wires that I stated above are colour coded. All you have to do is match the colours on the harness to the pioneer unit harness. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

Let me know how it goes!

I think the $6 one from eBay will work just fine. I would definitely use a wiring harness. All you'll need to do is unplug the factory head unit and plug in your Pioneer.

Believe it or not, they sell the dash kit and wire harness at Walmart. Personally, I got mine from Best BUy, I think it's a little better quality. (Tighter fit, more secure connections).

All you have to do is connect the BestBuy wire harness to the harness that comes with your Pioneer. Theoretically, all the wires colors should match up, but read the diagram on the package and your Pioneer instructions to make sure.
When I did mine, I was literally sitting at my kitchen table, warm and comfy. I connected the two ends of the harnesses together, with crimp connectors (This is where you make actual splice connections). Took about 10 minutes. I went outside, pulled the trim piece and the factory tape deck out, unplugged it, removed the pocket from the OEM radio ( I already had one), attached the pocket to the Pioneer, plugged the Pioneer in, and installed/screwed it in the dash. Snap the trim back on and done..

The wire harness saves you from cutting out the factory plug. You're in a sense making you're own adapter that goes between the factory harness and your pioneer harness.

It also makes it easier to re-install the factory unit if you sell the car.

Your original wiring harness from the Toy will not plug into ANY aftermarket head unit. Buy the harness, use butt connectors & heat shrink tape to make all of the connections to your aftermarket head unit and then just simply plug it into the factory plugs. You can re-use that same wiring harness adapter over and over if you decide to change head units (like most of us always do..)
