I have a 98 XLS and I had 2 MTX subs installed awhile ago. Everything was fine until recently, the CD player skips, often shuts on and off real fast then continues where it left off. Usually it does this when I am turning. Anyone know how I can fix this? Radio doesn't skip so I have no clue what is wrong.
I have the stock radio, with single disk. I cleaned the lens with that special CD, and it didn't help. Vibrations? I doubt it, but who knows, it doesn't vibrate that much.
you might have change out your stock radio then. playing burned cds in it leaves wear-n-tear issues. other than that you might have a cheap lens thats about to give out.

Hey! It ain't much to beat the block down, but it'll work for now...
I turned the bass boost on the amp for the subs down and the problem has stopped. Does that mean the amp was drawing too much power or what? And can I adjust the gain maybe to get more bass? I have also been messing with the bass controls on the head unit, I have the 7 speaker system. How high can I turn up the bass on the head unit without worrying about blowing a speaker? It goes up to +5.
It's not drawing too much power. The subs are causing something to vibrate, either the CD or the laser. That vibration is causing laser to lose tracking on the CD so it must search for the location and resume playing.
Turn your radio down. No one but you wants to hear your radio. Boom responsibly.
Yeah, I am not so sure about that. Right now I was messing with the amp turning the gain up and down and what not. When there is a heavy bass, or a I turn the volume up high that is when it skips. So do I need a new head unit to hold the CD in place better or read the disc better, or a more powerful amp? These subs are by no means extremely powerful, but they should be bumping a lot more than right now. And I have had them in for about 6 months before this set at the same level no problem. So this was recent.
A 'more powerful' amp will just cause your cd player to skip more often. The problem lies in the laser lens reading the information off of the cd...so the more vibration, the worse the skipping.
I'd start saving for a new head unit...and then after you have it installed and realize how much better the quality is, then you can think about a cleaner (not always higher power) amp and better 'boomin' subs...
Also, check out the basic car audio electronics website (click amplifiers on the right site menu) and then click the 'more info' about gain controls to get some good ideas behind setting the gain controls correctly. www.bcae1.com

what kind of amp are you running? if your under powering yours subs and have the bass boost and gain up it will blow your subs.. one mistake people make. if your using the stock cd players then thats how it is. that my stock cd was even before i got my subs. not to be an ass but if your turning your bass on teh cd up mean the your not running enough watts from the amp to the subs..
an amp have nothing to do with a cd player skipping. the vibration from the sub might will but all the amp has nothing to do with the cd player accept for the remote wire and the RCAs.. unless im missing something.
as for as your cd player goes, try buy a cd lens cleaner and give that a try.
and for touringcamy.. sometimes it fun to piss people off... dont worry i know my limits.. the most fun is when you hear other people bumping, and your bumps your and you drown them out = fun and funny.. just IMO..

Well, I know how that is, bass is addictive. However, what annoys the fuck out of me is when some ass has to drive around a residential neighborhood with the radio turned up at 1 am and you can hear it when the car is down the block. Or if I'm sitting at a stop light and the stereo in the other car is vibrating my car.
I have a single 12 and even that gets way louder than my liking, not that it doesn't sound good, but I'd like my sense of hearing, and I'd like to continue to enjoy music 15 years from now.
I've been to car audio competitions, just as a spectator since my single 12 doesn't bump that loud, and they've got crazy loud systems, but at least that is a sanctioned event away from people's houses and people who are there to hear want to be there.

for me, i dont bump at night cause i hate that myself. but usually when i come to a stop light i'll just turn down the bass. mine is loud, but isnt loud enough for me.. i want to do at least low to high 140 Dbs on audio control then i'll be set. hmmm... i wonder if i vibrate the cars next to/around me...
