free air is when the subwoofer is designed to mount to a surface and fire into the car, using the car as the box so to speak. most subs do not sound good this way and are usually not made for this unless specified.
i assumed by what i have highlighted you were saying you were going to mount the subs to a wall (surface) against the back or your trunk (firing into the trunk of the car). maybe i misunderstood?
a tuned port enclosure is an enclosure that has a specific sized port in it (circular or rectangular). the size of the port maches the frequency delievered best by the sub. if the sub hits best at 32 hertz then the port needs to be "tuned to 32 hertz for the sub to sound the best. the way you tune a port is by the size. lengthening or shortening the port and widening or narrowing the surface area of the port will change the frequency it is tuned to.
a tuned port enclosure is something used when: 1)the amp running the sub is too small and needs to be optomized (a ported enclosure doesnt need near the power a sealed enclosure does). 2)the listener likes rap music and like for his bass to rattle his windows and the windows of the car next to him.
