2007 camry ce "want to add amp+sub"

Hey guys, thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2007 Camry ce in manual shift. I want to install an amp and sub. The questions i need answered are: Is there a preout on the factory head unit? How do you get to the back of the head unit? How big of an amp will i need to power a sub that will not be too overpowereing , yet not lacking either. I have installed an amp and sub in my box truck at work, so with the correct help, i should be able to handle it. Thanks guys.

Dude...you have the same car as me...CE Manual.

The factory HU does not have pre-outs. You'll need to get a line-out converter and hook that to some speaker leads. That will give you a signal for amp input.

How much are you looking to spend on an amp and sub? There's all kinds of stuff out there that range from $100 to $1000 for a sub amp. I'd say maybe 300W into a 10 or 12 would be a good amount if you're just looking to add bass. I'm about to do the same thing but I haven't decided whether to go with a 10 or 12. Although I've already replaced the factory HU and front speakers.

To get to the back of the HU is a pain in the ass.

You have to remove the shift knob. Then pull off the piece that surrounds the shift knob and hand brake. Then take out the storage box in front of the shifter and disconnect the two wire harness. Remove the upper air vents. Then you'll see four 10mm bolts under the vent control and above the stereo. Remove these 4 bolts and the HU and the vent controls come out together.

Thanks for the input. What type of head unit did you put in? The factory unit sucks and the speakers sound like crap with the ipod, They sound like they won't last more than a year. Did you need a kit to install new unit? By the way, i am looking to spend less than $500 on sub and woofer, but certainly want a jl audio woofer. I think i can get it done if i look hard enough. Thanks again for the help. I would have ripped the car apart only to find no pre-outs.

you mean subwoofer and amp?

anyways as touring said you can get a Lineout converter. You can connect it to the rear speakers so you wont need to remove your head unit at all. (This is of course if you want to keep your stock HU)
You would have to run a 12V pwr cable from the battery to the back. You wont need long rca's if you connect the line out converter to the rear speakers since it will be near your sub/amp.
Now you should have you RCA signal, 12 pwr, and Ground for the amp.
Now you need a remote wire. What i did was i found a fuse that turned on when i turned the key on and turned off when i turned the key to off. (Forget which fuse). You can tap into that fuse and run the wire to the trunk. Now connect all the corresponding wires to the amp and than connect the amp to the sub. Adjust gains etc and now you have a sub hooked up.

Thanks CamrySExxx. That was my one remaining question...the remote wire. Perfect. I just did a quick search on ebay and found the line converters for around $10. Does that sound right? The had a few others for well over a hundred, but, they were 6 and 8 channels. I am assuming that is for running multiple amps. Thanks again for the help and if you could recommend a good 300w amplifier, that would be great. I know i cannot go wrong with the JL Audio 10 or 12" woofers.

I put in a Premier DEH-P860MP. It's an older HU that I got in 2005 or thereabouts.

I've replaced the stock front speakers and when I get my sub, the rear speakers are coming out too. At the least they'll be disabled. If you look on Crutchfield, there's an amp from Profile that goes for about $100 that'll do 350W RMS into 2 ohms. Get a 4ohm DVC sub and you'll be good.

Remember that you still have to get an enclosure for the sub also. That typically runs ~$100 for a basic sealed box custom built.

My recommendation would be:
Profile mono amp $100
Image Dynamics ID10 D4 ~$130
or
ID12D4 ~$150
Custom enclosure for $100
Amp kit, ~$50 from KnuKonceptz.com
Line out converter ~$10

Total ~$390 to $410 if you do the install yourself.

Oh, I didn't include shipping in those prices above other than maybe the amp kit, so you'll have to account for that also.

Good advice guys. I am set now on prices and have bought the JL 12w3v3 on ebay for $90. shipped w/out enclosure. Another question though. If i will not be upgrading the factory speakers for a while, is there an easy way to keep the bass to the sub and the highs and mids to the factory speakers without adding an expensive crossover? Thanks again. I also found a product that eliminates the remote wire from fuse box or head unit. The product is the Peripheral SVENR It is a line out converter and current sensor in one. Find it on ebay for $38 shipped.

If that sub is new, there is no manufacturer warranty to go with it since you bought it on eBay.

There is a user on this board called Mr Marv that builds awesome custom enclosures. PM him for more information. This is his website: http://community-2.webtv.net/MarvsPlace/MarvsPlace/

The least expensive way to stop the woofers from producing bass that the sub would produce would be to get some things call bass stoppers. These go for about $3/ea on partsexpress.com. They also have crossovers that will high pass but those are at least $25 ea. Whether you go with bass stoppers or crossovers, you will need one for each speaker. As for preventing the sub from producing trebles, you just set the crossover on the amp accordingly.

^ yeah make sure you set the LPF (low pass filter) on the amp. Also IMO the stock system doesnt even produce that much bass anyways to begin with. The bass is so weak at bass level 5 (highest) you wont even notice the bass in the speakers if your running it off your stock stereo.

Guys, i could use some help. I am looking for the best place to run my power supply through the firewall, with the least amount of labor. Also, if anyone is familiar with the line out converters, i am wondering...there are 5 wires on one end which are for the speakers and the ground. Then on the other end...besides the rca plugs, there is a yellow for 12 v constant, blue for the remote wire and a black for a ground. Would i just hook the yellow to the power on the amp, blue to the remote on amp and ground through the ground on the amp as well? Thanks guys.

If you look in the engine bay on the passenger side, there is a rubber thing with a bundle of wires running through it. I put a hole in that and ran the power wire through there. It goes inside the passenger area above the foot well area for the front passenger. There isn't much space up there to work, but it can be done. I found that putting a bit of grease on the rubber thing made it a slightly easier to slide the wire through.

As for the LOC, the way hookup you are describing sounds fine.
