tweeter placement

Looking for info on tweeter placement in a 3.5 gen Camry. Pics would be nice or actual experience with this model. My first choice would be in the upper door panel but not sure whats behind it so I could flush mount it. My next choice would be in the wing at the window corner. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I attached my tweeters to that black triangle that covers the mirror bolts. worked great and let me keep all my wiring and stuff in the doors.

ditto on the triangle piece near the side-view mirrors. they'll sound even better if they have angle mounts. and since they'd be located higher compared to the door panel, they'll be closer to ear level.

my old gen4, i installed the tweets on the door panel, which kind of curved inward. sound was good.

now on my gen5.5, the tweets are on the triangle piece and angle mounted. they sound sweet!

i strongly advice not to place them at ear level.. doing so will negatively effect your sound stage. all you will hear is the high frequencies of the tweeters. in my old gen 3, I had my tweeters in both the A pillars and the door panel where the stock tweeters went on the upgraded OEM stereo. Both locations proved to be very harsh on the ears. In my gen 5.5 i am using the same components but i had baffles made to house both the woofer and the tweeter in the door position. This is 100x better for the fact that the woofer and tweeter and close together and there is no time delay. i recommend contacting MrMarv on here about getting baffles made to do the same.

Agree with SMAN and fredberg. The triangle cover is a good location. Should be a very easy install, you keep all the wiring inside the door, you don't have to cut a hole in your door panel, and the tweeters are mounted higher than they would be in the door panel.

I have a 95 XLE with the tweeters in the door handles. When I bought the car they were fried so all my high end was coming from the lower door location. I recently replaced them with a pair of Polk Audio DB1000 tweets and it REALLY improved the high end. I chose to stick with the factory location, otherwise I would have mounted on the triangle cover for all the reasons noted above.

Stereo sound is very subjective/personal, so I'm not questioning MrSo0h0o's experience, but I don't find the sound to be harsh at all in the XLE door handle location. My Sequoia has the tweeters mounted up in the corner of the windows and I don't find that to be harsh either.

When you remove that triangle cover, be careful/gentle. It's relatively easy to crack it.

yes, ive heard this rationale, regarding sound stage n time delay. i wuld try it myself, but i dont have the fabricating skills to make custom baffles for both mids n tweets. plus, ive always worried about my legs or my passengers legs gettin in the way of the tweeter. i'll look into that some day though. thnx...

Here you go. Did a little Googleing. These guys say you should NEVER mount your tweets by the side view mirror. My sound stage must be totally screwed up and I didn't even know it. Ignorance is bliss I guess

I have my speakers setup in my doors together like MrSoho and it's awesome. Almost sounds like I have headphones on because the sound is centered on me due to my time alignment settings.

I haven't had issues with the passenger's legs, or my own, blocking the sound. If anything, the stereo sounds weird to the passenger because it makes the music sound like originates is from my steering wheel and gauge cluster area since that's how my time alignment is setup. Turn off time alignment and it sounds like it's coming from the middle.

granted, having tweeters too far away from the mids AND at ear-level will make poor sound stage imaging. so i was wondering about another scenario...

how about using a coax speaker in the stock locations? even though u cant angle the tweeters around, wuld this have better sound stage than having tweeters at ear-level?

the problem comparing coax's with components is that:
a. coaxs' tweeters are in a stationary position and are basically aimed at your calf
b. coaxs' tweeters cannot be crossed over at the users discretion
c. coaxs' usually cannot handle as much power as components
d. components give you the option to bi-amp which will give you even better sq

it really does come down to personal preference though. if you have the equipment already, i would play around with the different locations using double sided tape. If you dont have the equipment already, see if a friend has a system that you can listen to or go to a local audio shop. if they are any good, they would be glad to show you some of their work.
