JL Sub not sounding that good

I just installed my JL 10" subwoofer w/ an alpine mrp-f450.
The JL is 10" about 300RMS, the Amp is 200RMS bridged. However i never play my music that loud. I like SQ over anything else. I heard the JL 10" is supposed to be good for sound quality.. but when i play it.. it sounds pretty messy for very low basses. Im wondering if thats only happening in my car..

Is there anyway to improve how my subwoofer sounds w/o spending more money? I got my equipment at a huge discount and i couldnt really go in and try it out, but i heard JL subs usually has good SQ? I have the sub facing towards the seats.

its very important as to what type (sealed or ported) and the quality-construction of box ur sub is in. im not sure which JL sub u have, but they can perform well in sealed or ported box. sealed boxes are supossedly better for sound quality.

also, facing ur sub frontwards may give u cancellation, standing waves. in other words, less bass. face ur sub backwards first, see how it sounds. then u can do more research on ur box.

Well actually an update, it doesnt sound that great and my ears would hurt after 2 minutes of listening. I had someone else sit in there and their ears started hurting too. Why does the sub make our ears hurt????

Who did the installation? If you did you might want to take it to someone who installs stereo's professionally before you damage your system. If that happens its going to cost you twice as much.

I had a similar problem with my sub. I turned the sub around and had it face the back, sounded much better but I also found that my sealed truck box isn't good enough for my sub so you might want to change out your box too.

the box is a big thing, if the box is okay and you're pointing back, its time to use sound deadener.

use the hpf to filter out the lowest lows, as a 10 inch might struggle to produce the really low notes. And read the manual to find the optimum sized box, but 1 foot sounds much better than 2 for a sealed box. Lastly, as fredburg said facing the sub towards the back is better.

the problem might be from your wiring. What model is your subwoofer and ohms?? your amp will only produce 200 watts at 4ohm bridge.

Your amp is a 4 channel amp so you would need to run a subwoofer rca wire from your deck to which ever channel your running your subwoofer.

pic will help

I'd say that was your biggest problem (if it was sealed) and even 1.0 cu ft sealed is too large for any JL 10" IMO. What model is the sub?
