4th Generation Dang speaker mount grommets on 2000 Camry

Hi folks:

After much fiddling, I decided to go back to using the Toyota grommets to mount the baffle I've created for my mid-bass (don't ask-long sordid story).

I had already removed the old ones, so I ordered a set of new ones and tried to install those. The new ones, at least 2 out of 3 of them won't stay in. The little tabs just don't seem to be grabbing onto the body.

Now, I had Hushmat on one side of the doorskin, but one of the grommets installed fine, so why won't the others? I tried clearing away the extra Hushmat goo from the grommet area, just in case the extra material made the mounting area too thick. Still no progress. One grommet stays in, the second grommet grips at its bottom end, but moves in an out at the top, and a 3rd one just slides in and out with no grip at all.

Please, if you can suggest something, I'm losing my frickin' patience with this project. This was one stage of the project where I thought nothing could possibly go wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Philippe

did you check to see if the tab mounts are damaged or warped from trying. can you click the a tab in the tab mount without the panal? I'm not really much help Iknow but sometimes they're a pain. I get stuack like that too. I usaully end up breaking all the tabs, trying make the thing submit. since my patients for completing simple easy things remain under a 1 hour time limit, before I go back to hiroshima on its ass.

samarai912:

Thanks for that. Well, I can't really tell whether those tabs are damaged or not after my having tried to install them once.

Are these things so delicate that you only get one chance? Sheesh, they're nylon-I would've thought they'd be stronger than that.

I just know they look "pushed in" or recessed slightly, but only slightly from the (other new ones I haven't yet tried to install.

And I know what you mean about patience. I've put in a ridiculous number of hours on this project, and with nothing but problems, every single step of the way. My patience is wearing thin-particularly since I can tell Toyota seems to have gone out of their way to make this process painful every step of the way.
