3rd Generation auto dimmer on HU?

I'm in the process of adding some amps and a sub to my system, and while I have the H.U. out of the dash anyways, I wanted to hook up the illumination lead. I now install everything myself, but when I got this deck,(an Alpine CDA-9883) I was lazy and had it installed. I just leave it on dim now because it's a pain to change, and is way to bright at night, but in the sun it's hard to read. Well because the factory stereo didn't have this lead the harness didn't have it either, and the tech never hooked it up. So, my question is how do I hook this lead up? I have no idea if it goes to a fuse box, is just spliced into one of the lights power lead or what. The sketchy info I got from google implies it would just be spliced into the dash lights or something, but I want to check. Thanks for the Help.

I believe you would hook it up to the parking lights. Oddly enough I don't think I've ever checked the polarity of it.

yea just hook it up to the parking light lead. there may be a wire behind the HU already, the ILL wire that would light up the stock HU. you can hook it up to that also, should be an orange wire with a white stripe in most cases.

I believe it depends on whether your cars lighting system is designed for this feature.

Actually, most OEM radios illumination is done with conventional lamps, or LED's that will dim with the dash lights.

The EL / back-lit displays on inexpensive head units will not be dimmable vial lowering the voltage supplied by the dash lighting circuit.

higher end head units will use the dash light circuit voltage as a reference and change the lighting level.

See now I assumed that these dimming systems are activated by a signal from the car lighting system telling the HU to dim the display (i.e., a control command). I didn't realize that it was a simply applying power to a switch in the HU. So if the wire wasn't in the car harness I didn't think you could use it. Most audio unit instructions don't show you how to just hook the dimming wire into the lighting system unless there is a wire in the car harness. Thanks.
