Gen5 Free-air/rear deck sub install

my summer project, i wanna drop an 8" sub (or a pair) in the rear deck. i'm gonna do it myself, so i know im gonna have to cut into the (steel) rear deck to mount them, probably secure them with MDF baffles.

should I also cut holes in the rear deck cover (the top plastic part)? i kinda want to keep the install stealth. but im afraid that the plastic cover may reduce the bass output. i will also make sure there is clearance between the rear deck and the plastic cover, to make room for sub excursion.

any suggestions/ideas much appreciated. thnx!

[background: i currently dont have a subwoofer. i dont like lugging around a sub box. my current setup is aftermarket 6X9's all around and giving them 40W each. the bass is pretty good, considering no real sub.

so i thought dropping a pair of little subs in the rear deck and amping them wuld give a bit more kick.]

well, if you are gonna put a sub/subs in the rear deck, you will HAVE to get rid of the rear 6x9's, or else the sub(s) will destroy them for you lol.

As for the hole in the rear deck cover, if you are a good fabricator, i would say modify the rear deck cover so that there is a speaker grille there and while you are at it, get rid of the rear speaker grille's so that you have on centered circular grille. I think that would look sweet. I would also recommend that you sound dampen the shit out of the rear deck. At least 2 layers if not more. Without that, all you will hear is annoying rattles from the metal clips of the rear deck cover, and who knows, maybe even rattle out the back window lol.

Either way, good luck with this project, i will be excited to see it!

Strengthening the rear deck should be the upmost important part of this install. If u dont want to ruin the OEM deck u can fabricate one then cover it speaker grill cloth, just an idea.Good luck with the install.

There is another problem with this, as i ran into it with a friends subaru. You will need to remove the trunk tensioners in order to fit the sub hanging off the rear deck. This is probably going to kill your project ideas. Unless you want to lift the heavy trunk every time you want to get in there. You would be better off building a baffle into the pass through for the rear seat.
