Keyless Entry for 4Runner

First time post.

I've got a 97 4Runner. I lost the key fob, for the keyless entry system. Without this I cannot engage the alarm system. The dealer says the part is approx $80, I need to set up a 30-60 minute appointment to get it "programmed". There's got to be an easier way. Please advise and thanks in advance.

Sounds pretty much right. My '97Camry didn't come with remote from the stupid used lot I liberated her from. Went to the dealer and it was way more for the replacement ($200Canadian?) plus an hours charge to program it.
I don't think most private shops would have access to the pograming; at least the shop I like to deal with here cannot.

Can't you just set the alarm by locking the doors before you step out, then disable it when you use the key to unlock the door? That's how mine works right now.

Good luck

Find out what kind of alarm system you have and then do a search for it on the web. You can program it yourself in like 2 minutes if you have the instructions. I found them online for my 03 Camry.....

Try this:

open drivers side door
stick the key in the ignition then pull it out
lock and unlock the door 5 times
shut and then open the door
lock and unlock the door 5 times
stick the key in the ignition and turn to on then off then on then off
pull the key out of the ignition
you should hear the door locks go clunk clunk
press the two top buttons on the remote for 1 second
then press the unlock button by itself for 1 second then repeat the pressing process for the second remote.

If that doesn't work, try looking for Technical Service Bulletins on your car, that should contain the instructions as well.

Hey SilverStreak thanks for the info, after reading it I just searched on ebay and there's remotes like crazy, 80pages worth and pretty good prices compared to the dealer although buying online isn't always 100% satisfactory.

I'll try to attach this link for one that might work for a 97 4runner I saw on ebay.

Hope that works. I guess you have to make sure the fcc# or code is good for your specific vehicle, then get the programming procedure. Cool.

remote programming

Hi Silver Streak,

I have the 99 4Runner also and the programming instuctions work....BUT only for the first remote....when I duplicate the pressing for the second remote, it doesn't work...only the first one works.

Any ideas? Do I need another step?

Also (sorry for so many questions...) Where can I find service bulletins on my truck to see if the instructions are there?

thanks a bunch!

Steve
