This is my first post on this site. I'm really impressed with the amount of information available. Although what I'm wanting to do is probably a lot simpler than the kinds of setups you usually discuss.
- How can I play my iPod through a head unit and have it charge without ceding control of the iPod to the head unit?
- Will my head unit have to have a CD changer output to do this? Or is there another kind out output that is also "powered"?
- I can't afford one of the bigger units that include a screen or GPS unit.
Hi, I just got my first Matrix last Tuesday. It's a 2005 XR with 53K. It has the stock radio w/o the disc changer. I'm going to be getting a new head unit for it and I want to be able to play my 30GB iPod Video through it. I have a 20$ FM transmitter right now until I get the final solution worked out.
I've seen lots of units now that will let you control the iPod right through the unit. That's great except you can no longer use the iPod itself to watch videos. I like to watch podcasts in my car on my lunch break

Also, it looks like the Alpine units with the "iPod Full Speed" ability won't handle more than 3,400 songs. That's also a problem. I've got 5,000+ now and I'll have more when I get around to upgrading to the 160GB iPod Classic.
I know I can just plug it into an AUX input with a mini-phono but then I have to rely on the iPod battery or have a separate power adapter running into the lighter. If I'm going to get a new head unit I want to do it right.
And to make it more difficult I'd like to have a single disc CD player, red illumination, and a mini-phono AUX input on the front so I can connect other devices. But I could compromise.
So what are my options? My husband has a 2005 Corolla XRS with a Kenwood unit and a cable he got off eBay. It charges the iPod and just runs the audio into the changer output. But he sometimes has issues with a "whining" noise. I don't see any cables like that listed on Crutchfield. Do they still offer them or has everyone gone with the cables that give the controls to the head unit?
TIA!
