Replace front or add rear speakers?

I have a 1999 Tercel. I just put in a new deck. I also realized I have no rear speakers!

So I'm wonder if you guys think I would gain more from replacing the factory front speakers, or adding new rear speakers.

I'm not after thumping bass, just decent, full range sound. The deck is a JVC, 20W-RMS x 4 at 4 ohms.

I found a good pair of rear speakers on sale, but I wonder if good fronts would be a better first step?

Personally, I would generally go with upgrading the front speakers. Most audio enthusiasts would generally say that we usually listen to things, including musical sources, that are in front of us. Most of the time, you don't go to a concert and sit with your back to the performers.

That being said, everyone has his/her own taste, and some people love the effect of having sound come from all directions.

What size/type speakers are the fronts?

They are apparently "4T" which is a weird size. I bought a pair of 4" replacements but they need some weird mounting bracket to install. I'm going to try and find one and see if I can get ripped off by Futureshop some more

I bought a pair of 6.5" for the rear at the same time which also need mounting brackets. Plus wire harnesses. All this great sound is a pain in the wallet!

I've never heard of "4T". Looks like they are roughly 4.5" speakers.

If it were me, I'd return the Future Shock purchase, and buy from a store with higher quality gear. Then again, I hate Future Shock.

Hmm...a quick Google suggests that Crutchfield sells a Pioneer coaxial that will fit in those holes:

While that would probably improve your sound, I'd seriously consider trying to install at least a 5 or 5.5 inch driver in there, if you have the time/patience/werewithal.

You'll get very little power/bass out of a 4" driver, by almost anyone's standards. A driver of at least 5" will give you a little more bass.

I know sometimes the work gets annoying, but in the end, it's usually really worth it. At least for me, it was...

Oh, wait, I mean IS. I still have more work to do on my 2000 Camry. (pics in another post)
