Red Alarm Light/Door locks

I could use some advice on fixing my 2002 Rav4 alarm. I recently (less than 1 year ago) had it "fixed". I seem to have the same problem now and do not want to pay again to fix this, if it is something I can do myself.
A few days ago, the function to lock the doors completely disabled. Neither buttons in the car, or the key fob worked to lock. Then yesterday, the red light that usually blinks turned solid red. It stopped blinking. But along with that, the alarm stopped working. However, I did regain the ability to lock the doors.
Less than a year ago, the alarm disabled (red light solid, key fob only worked to lock/unlock).
How do I fix this myself now? Please keep in mind that I am not mechanically inclined. I just pad $75 to find out why my "check engine" light was on--only to find out it was a loose wire!
Thanks for any advice
