You want to replace the entire stereo? Or are you looking for ipod connectivity?
As long as you have a CD port (which the factory head units will have including the 6disc changer)...you can buy kits to hook up your ipod to. These kits can be purchased pretty cheaply.
I have the ipod2car unit (PXDP) - cost me $104 off ebay including everything you need to hook things up.
One of the better single din radios out there, the Alpin IDA-X001:
They recently dropped the price on it as well, it's no w $269 at Crutchfield.
I've had this radio for over a year and love it!

Home I have the FHP8000BT from pioneer. Its a great unit I don't think you can get much better unless you want and LCD screen. Connects with Ipod and Iphone. But you get an error then it starts to work. and had Blee tooth built in. You don't need to buy anything extra to get this unit to work with ipod. Becareful of that some say they are ipod ready meanig you have to buy another pice to install. And this is a double din and gives 3 lines of text really a good all around unit. the paring of the blue tooth is a little odd but works once you figure it out.
I also know two other memebers have it installed to. There are a few post about it. just search my Username or the model number. I know my post have picutres.
You can't go wrong with Pioneer. I have the pioneer DEH-4900ib which has been discontinued, but they still make something similar. I got the Premier version which comes with the ipod cord (otherwise you had to buy it separately, but it isn't expensive).
I will also advise you against any Sony Xplod head units. I had one of those with the ipod hookup in my previous truck. The main problem was the ipod navigation. The controls were not intuitive at all, and even once I got used to them it was still a pain. For example, you had to turn on the shuffle feature every time, which was irritating as hell. With the pioneer I can leave it on shuffle. Also, choosing a playlist took way too long because there was no select button. I can't really testify about the sound quality of it because it was hooked up to stock F-150 speakers (much, much, much worse than stock Taco speakers). Another plus is the faster connection speed with the pioneer cable.
As far as Ipod, go with pioneer or alpine, stay away from sony.

When you order this from Crutchfield, do you get everything you need for the installation (new faceplate, wiring harness, etc)? Also, does this HU take advantage of the steering wheel controls right out of the box?

Whatever you decide on, make sure it works with whatever generation ipod you have. The new ipods and 3G iphones use a different cable than the older ones; they will play music but they will not charge your ipod if it's a newer version. My Pioneer D3 works perfect with my 3rd Gen ipod, 1st gen mini, 1st gen nano and 1st gen video. But does not work with my iphone 3G or the current ipods; touch, classic, etc.

I have the Alpine X100 which is the newer model than the one mentioned above me in this thread. The X001 is discontinued (but you can still get it).
Crutchfield sells it with everything you need to mount in the tacoma. I also got the satellite radio addon and the remote control. The dash kit they send has the bumps on it, not smooth like the scosche kit. I didn't take any photos of it in my truck but I'll try to take one later today. I used the scosche kit with mine (a friend wanted the Crutchfield kit with the bumps because it can do single or double din).
Edit: it works with both my nano 3rd gen and my older 80 gig video ipod. You just need different cables if you want to see all the info on the screen display.
The ipod actually lives in the cubby under my 12 volt outlets. I routed the cable under there to
reach the radio so once you plug the ipod in you access everything from the headunit of the radio.
It also charges the ipod. The only negative is that if you turn off the truck the ipod will stay on
so you'll be draining its battery while you are away. I just remember to turn it off myself.
I also bought the remote you see in the lower din shelf (its handy for the "mute" function)
and I put one of those non-skid phone pads to keep things from flying around.
I have the XM installed but you can't see the parts because its all behind the dash.
I don't have the bluetooth extra or the HD radio.
I just ordered the Alpine 9884 from Crutchfield and it syncs really well with my Ipod. The controls can be funky at first but you will get used to it. I paid about 180 for it and it pushes my door speakers and the Polk 6 1/2's very well. The 9884 also has a remote you can buy for extra. If you want to spend more then I would recommend the Alpine x100. Nice interface and beautiful display.
The install was pretty easy because Crutchfield sends you a custom install kit for whatever model you have.
Good luck with your search. The Alpine HU's have never done me wrong.
PS. Ignore the vendor name that is on the pic I attached. I pasted it in here because this is the most accurate picture of this HU that I could find.
