6 1/2 Polk Audio Question

I have the Polk Audio 6 1/2 rear decks speakers. They sound amazing, but there is very little low end frequency. I am not looking for a thumping system, but I just want a little better bass response from the rear decks.

I heard that building mini boxes for them would work for this, but I am not sure.

Any suggestions guys/gals?

...would be good if you can give more details to what else you have in your audio setup. Also, which Polk series 6 1/2 are you using?

If bass is what you want, you're better off with a sealed 8 or 10 in the trunk.

I am running Polk Db650's with an Alpine 9884 head unit. My car is a 96 Camry sedan. Hope you can give me some good info Tobeit.

Well, I am not a real expert but I can give you my opinion. The db650 are not known for delivering a lot of bass - they are getting good reviews for clarity and mid/high frequency response, bass response is so-so. Also, that is even more so in your case as they appear to need to get enough power to produce any noticeable bass.

Now to your question - I think you should try adding an amp if you like to keep these and not want to add a separate sub. They are getting better reviews and appear to perform better at the lower frequencies when powered right. I would not think that a mini box will change anything for the better.

PS: Do you have front door/dash speakers?

Thanks for your information Tobeit. I am thinking about running an amp, I thought the Alpine 9884 HU had enough clean power to push those little 6.5's but I guess not.

I have the stock speakers in the doors still.

I would first try an amp. Your HU has 18W RMS (50W peak) vs 60W RMS (180W peak) for the polk speakers. If I would be you, I would look into a 4 channel amp with at least 40W-60W RMS/channel. Your HU has 6 channel preamp out for easy install. Good luck.

...and than replace the door speakers with some 6.5" shallow subwoofers like kicker CVT65 (in that case, buy a bigger amp...)

Will those Kickers fit in my doors? I would love to get those if its an easy fit.

Dont expect much from those 6.5's ,even when amped. Not familiar with ur '96 speaker sizes but if u can do 6x9's amped in the rear deck that will make a difference if not go with a dedicated sub like mentioned. Also swap those fronts out for aftermarkets b/c even with just HU power it'll sound better.Check Crutchfield for speaker fitment.

sure, 6.5" are just an entry level sub...but they do help, fit in small spaces like his door panels, and make a nice all around sound when paired with these 6.5" Polks in the back...all amped up and it will improve the stock sound a lot.

6.5's in the doors amped will surely sound better.I ran 6.5's Polk MoMo(amped) in my 02 Camry's doors,of course the doors was treated which makes a big difference. I see no one mentioning any type of sounddeadening treament for the doors/reardeck.To the OP u will be disappointed if u do not perform some type of deadening(I've been there ,done that). Now for the rear,6x9's are more appropiate b/c they're really tailored towards IB(infinite baffle) reardeck installs b/c they typically put out more bass(due to more cone area) but the midrange suffers on them. You can put all the power u want to the speakers but when sheet metal & panels start buzzing dont blame the speakers.YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
