99 Avalon XLS sterio dilema

The factory headunit is a cd/tape/cd changer control with cd changer in the trunk. I have a Zune that I was going to hookup with a tape player adapter. I hook it up and it kicks the tape out. Is my only option besides wireless fm to get a new headunit? If so, what do I need to know? I don't use cds, all my music is on my Zune. In the trunk there are amp hookups but I don't know if they are wired into the factory amp or the headunit.

My first guess is that perhaps you have a faulty car adapter...try it in someone else's car (i know it might be difficult to find someone with a tape player tho..) before reverting to other drastic measures.

I did a search on Crutchfield for you, you have 2 choices for factory harnesses,

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_581PA15...ce.html?tp=120

or

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_541ISAS...it.html?tp=120

If your not so good with car audio and whatnot I would highly recommend buying it from them as they will provide you with on the phone support as well as a detailed set of instructions, if you know what your doing buy it on eBay or another site as you will get it for less.

I would stay as far away as possible from tape adapters and fm transmitters as possible, not even worth the hassle. A good fm adapter will cost 2/3rds of a factory radio harness but you will loose so much quality streaming via fm.

Thanks, I decided I will be replacing the factory unit. I have an fm transmitter and it stinks. What would be a fair price to ask for my factory headunit and cd changer?

At least 150, but that's a definite low ball. Having the changer helps a lot.

It really depends on how clean you can do the uninstall and how good of shape its in. I would look around ebay, i know ive seen them for $225 there but I dont know if it actually sold for that.

I have a 1998 Avalon XLS and the previous owner had an aftermarket CD changer. I have never heard or seen an Avalon OEM CD changer. I looked on eBay and none of them are for sale. You could contact a Toyota dealership and they would tell you if the changer is compadible with ones that didnt have one to begin with.

The head unit however should be good to use with all 96 through 99 Avalons.

hmmm, thats strange.

The model number on there should help you a lot. I searched it on google and found a guy with a 2003 Tundra tuck that had the exact same changer, but other than that, nothing. So even if it was a rare feature you know its in a wide range of model and year cars.
