Wattage question: HU---Speakers

Hello!
I have a Rolla 09 and I changed the 4 speakers with Pioneer at the rear and Sony on the front.
The pioneer speakers come with 400W 3 ways and the Sony 190W 2 ways
The actual Toyota head unit seems to have insufficient power output, the sound could cut off at volume +57 and the sound quality is crappy at higher volume!
I decided to buy a Pioneer head unit AVH-P3100 which should give up to 4x50W per channel,so my question is : Will this 50W power output be sufficient for the speakers I have or I still have to buy an amplifier?
When I want to compare the power output of the head unit with the input power of speakers, which one to compare?? Rms,maximum rated input power, peak power...??? I am lost!

first the "400w 3 ways and 190w 2 ways" are not that wattage. That is their peak wattage. RMS wattage is what you look at, nothing else. With aftermarket speakers, connecting them to an amplifier is always the better solution. Honestly, I would recommend getting some better equipment if sound quality is what you want.

To add to what Mr Soohoo said, the output from the HU is not 4x50W. You need to look at the RMS output which should be around 18-23W generally for a head unit.

Your headunit is rated @ 22 Watts RMS per channel, not the 50w that Pioneer advertises.

Look at speakers that come as close to that power requirement as possible if you don't want to use an external amplifier.

The sony's you have up front are not going to be good sq at all, but they will be better than stock. Get the hu, see if its loud enough for you while still not clipping or sounding distorted. You can't just turn it up all the way if it sounds crappy, that clipping can blow your speakers. Get an amp with rms ratings close to your speakers if the hu alone can't get the job done.

As others have said, peak values are worse than useless(as they are misleading) and rms is all you need to look at. And if you are really serious about sq, you might want to start over with your system. If you just want a substantial improvement over stock though, what you have will be fine.

Yes I don't want to open a mobile night club!!! The actual volume is nice but of course with the more powerful Pioneer HU the sound quality will not be too messy!
I just red the specs of the rear speakers,it's 80W nominal rated input,is this the RMS??

That sounds about right for RMS power handling. It will work fine with the Pioneer radio without an external amplifier.
