Gen5 2002 Camry looking for love connection with Kenwood DDX-512 unit

I bought this unit (it arrives Monday!!) for my camry and I'd like to install it myself since I've been quoted about $145 just to install this thing. I only paid $300 for it so screw that! The only problem is I'm pretty green when it comes to anything other than filling my fluids and cleaning when it comes to my car... I've searched and searched for instructions that apply to MY car that I don't have to actually pay for with no luck. And I'm getting the sense that my having a sub and amp may complicate things... Can anyone give me some advice?

By the way, this unit has a DVD player which I'd like to be able to have on for passengers while driving. I read that if you don't ground the wire to the emergency brake it will work without being in park; any truth to this?

Damn that thing looks great!

Subs and amp? Are they installed? What stereo do you have in now? If there installed using speaker outs for a source you will have to run RCA wires through your car to get proper control over it when your stereo is in.

I looked really hard and I couldn't find any picture threads on how to install a head unit in your vehicle, if all else fails spend $10 on one of these: crutchfield master sheet. It's complete step by step instructions on your exact vehicle, everything from changing the stereo to adding aftermarket speakers. I've used them on some of the cars I've done and they were like a gift from god.

You will also need a new plastic part that will go around where your old head unit was. It should run you about $15.

To wire the whole thing easily and cleanly you will need a wiring harness for $10, it's not nessary but it will prevent you from making permanent modifications to your vechile as well as as save you about 45 minutes on the install time.

On the mastersheet, wiring harness, and plastic piece I selected that you had a 2002 Toyota Camry Sedan without Navigation system; without JBL audio system. If any of that's wrong, change it or it will not be compatible with your install.

Your going to need a bypass chip or a toggle switch to play DVDs while driving, I would recommend the bypass chip as it will be so much less hassle. It's hard to make your stereo look good when you repeatedly are flipping a switch and counting. It's an extra $65 but it's soooo worth it. I used to have a 7" head unit in my car that had it and it made car trips so much better.

Yeah all this stuff totals up to $100 but if you would of gotten it done professionaly done they wouldn't of ever put a bypass chip in, which would of sucked. Not to mention it's still $45 less than what they quoted you.

wiring the indash is going be easy, you will need a harness wire and a indash kit. you match the unit harness color with the aftermarket harness. it should fit prefectly.

On my kenwood ddx6019, i ground the wire for the ebrake to just any metal part. it should let you play dvd while driving. In Cali it is illegal to have the dvd unit playing a video while drving, it need to be behide the driver view.

So I tried putting in the head unit today with no luck... I got the wire adapter which comes with two pieces (harnesses) and I have no idea what to do with them. When I took out the stock HU, there was only one set of wires plugged into it and two blue wires with jacks on the end. The colors from the camry don't match what's on the harness or what is attached to the new HU. I can't find a wire color diagram for my car anywhere... I was so excited; not anymore...

Pandamanda, you need to wire that 2 piece harness to the head unit wire harness. The head unit should have come with a wiring diagram. Off the top of my head, red is 12V switched, yellow is 12V constant, orange is illumination, black is ground, white/black is front left, gray/black is front right... and on the second harness is the green/black for left rear and purple/black for right rear.

you can also just google "camry radio wiring diagram" and tons of stuff should pop up. It hasnt changed in a decade or so.

If there is only one white plug and you can't find another one you have the JBL premium sound system in your car which requires a different adapter. No big deal, it's what i have in my car. Factory Amp wiring harness

To make sure, you should probly look to see the JBL symbol somewhere on your car, if you see it you will know for sure.

I do have the JBL system...

Well I decided to suck it up last night and give their Customer Service a chance. I was pleasantly surprised! I was able to speak to someone who explained that most Toyotas have an extra set of plugs already in the car for an aftermarket HU! How thoughtful! Apparently what was plugged into the stock HU is irrelevant when putting in a new one. There are two plugs, a larger white one and a smaller blue one, that are below where the HU was. These are what connect to the wire harnesses. It was too late for me to try again last night but after work I'm going to give it another shot. Hopefully I can get some pictures to post for anyone else as clueless as me. Wish me luck!

Pandamanda,

In the below picture, if i remember correctly from my install, the intermediate harnesses that you need to use is located on the center bottom part of the picture. it is attached to something iirc. the wiring going to the right is going to the JBL amp and to the left is going to the speakers/spidered out.

Just a note, I think I only used the main part of the harness because I have amps and all aftermarket speaker wiring.

This is where it gets confusing... I know which harnesses you're talking about, but I have an amp and subs installed... There are two wires crimped onto the harness from the sub install that are connected to the stock HU. So do I need to just tape off the plug for the wires going to the right and splice the wires that were on the stock HU harness to the harness that will lead to the new HU?? Then connect the harness I bought to the harness leading to the left? If that makes any sense! lol

What are the colors of the wires on the wire harness that are being spliced into? This will tell us more about what you will need to do to put it all together.

Too bad you are all the way in PA, I would be willing to give you a hand

Believe me, I more than appreciate the help you're giving me already.

Well it turns out the pink wire with gray stripes is the only one being spliced into. It looked like more wires were spliced into as well because I saw all the crimp caps but it looks like the guy who did the install was fishing around until he found the right wire! lol

Sounds like the guy did a real hack job on your car! Never trust anyone who uses crimp caps on a car audio installation.

Back to the problem at hand, I looked at the wiring diagram and I only see a pink and blue wire. This wire is noted as "amp(radio side) - amp+ (on amp)". I am not quite sure what this is for, maybe someone else can chime in.

The other wire i see is a gray wire which is the acc wire. This wire basically is used to turn on your amp i assume.

Is there any other info that you can provide about your sub and amp install? To be honest I personally would rewire the amp and sub.

Hmmm... All I see is that he used an adapter and coming from it is that blue wire which splices to the pink wire... I'll try to see if there's any other info I can gather about it but this is all pretty new to me. Maybe I can take pictures and show you what's going on in there.
