amp, sub question

I don't understand this electrical stuff so don't laugh too loud. I have an amp rated at 280 watts rms at 2 ohms. I need to put a sub in and am wondering if I need a 2 or 4 ohm sub, or does it matter? Which will work the best. The amp will be used solely for the sub. Thanks.

If you run the amp into a 4ohm load it will put out about half it's rated power at 2ohms. You should be looking for a 2ohm single voice coil, or 4ohm dual voice coil sub.

^^^what he said OR you could do 2- 4 ohm subs wired in parallel. Dual voice coils also need to be wired in parallel.....280 watts RMS, that's a tad over 395 watts peak, nice. Maxed out, the amp will draw 33 amps. Use a 35 amp fuse to protect the wire and amp. Find 8 or 10 gauge wire to feed the amp. Spend the extra and get the choice that has the most strands. Current doesn't flow through the wire per se', it flows on it. More strands = more surface area= less voltage drop at the amp under heavy load.
