I like listening to hip-hop and what not but my rear speakers are shot. so I can't listen to the music they way i like to. What do you guys recommend for new ones? Also probably a sub and amp. thanks
If you're going to get a sub and amp, I would suggest forgoing the rear speakers and get a decent amp and sub setup. For hip hop, something in a ported enclosure will work better, but keep in mind it also take up more space than sealed.
The rear fill is nice, but a lot of sound quality oriented systems don't use rear speakers or remove them completely. You do miss some of the fill, but I found that the imaging is better without the rear speakers. I went without rear speakers for a while and I didn't really miss them too much. It's really personal preference though.
My suggestion would be to get a good sub and amp setup though. How much are you spending on your setup?
For $400, you can get a fairly decent amp and sub setup.
Maybe something like Clarion APX4361 amp. This is a 4 channel sub that can run with 2 of the channels bridged for the subwoofer. Then use the other two for components.
For sub maybe some kind of Arc Audio, Diamond Audio, or Image Dynamics ID sub.
For front components, maybe something like Alpine SPX series, or Diamon Audio D6, or Phoenix Gold RSD.
This probably already exceed $400...
I gotta go to work now, I'll lok into more later.
i would definitely go with an amplified set of front components and a sub, and ditch the rears. This is the way I have had my cars set up for the past 4-5 years and I will never go back.
Like touringcamry said, you can get a good 4 channel amp that will power both the components and the sub.
keep the deck
not sure of the speaker size for your car - I'm assuming 6.5" all around ? Either way - upgrade all 4 interior speakers. Simple 2-way's for the rear - but definitly components sets for the fronts. The speaker location is in the door lower panel (I think) where sound gets blocked easily - then bring the tweeters upto the top of the door panel.
I would spend a little extra and get a 5-channel amp and run a single 12" sub in a bandpass enclosure.
Space may mean little to nothing to you - but it's very important when setting up a sound system. Especially when it comes to mounting the amps
Hip Hop sounds best with a lot of base - but if your bass overpowers the mids and highs - you wont hear any of the lyrics
In a car that small, I would drop the rears alltogether. Use the money towards a good set of components for the front and pickup the 4ch. A good 5 channel is expensive and if you decide to upgrade your subwoofer at a later date, you can buy a mono amp.
I have sat in a Cavalier with only fronts and subs and to be honest, I couldn't even tell that the rears were removed.
Also, not being a fan of bandpass, I would go with a proper vented/ported enclosure.
