1996 Tercel audio wiring

I tried installing my new audio system in my 96 Tercel following the wiring diagram on here. All cables do match except that I don't know what the "white with green line" wire is for. I can't find a mention of it on any of the websites I searched. Also, I don't know what to do with the green (illumination) cable. There is no such thing on my new audio system. Do I have to plug this wire somewhere?

This thing is driving me crazy so any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

The standard color for the illumination wire on aftermarket radios is yellow, if it doesn't have it you don't have to use it.

Thanks for the input on the illumination wire. So now I know that I don't have to use the green wire.

Does anyone know something about the "white with green line" wire?

Green and White/Green wires are both for radio illumination. White/Green is the return portion of the circuit. If your radio has a provision to dim the display, you can hook-up the Green wire to that input to dim the new radio display when the rest of the panel lights are on (dims the display at night).

if your running RCA's to some sort of amp, you dont necessarily need any wires except power, switch and ground. My system bumps harrrd and the only wires i used from the factory harness are the thick black wire (ground) the red wire (12V) and a blue/white or just blue (switch power for amp). Then, run RCA's and the switch wires to the amp in the trunk or wherever then run speaker wire from the amps to...the speakers lol at least on my head unit, it lights up with just these three, even though there is an ILLUM. wire (which is yellow) and even tho i didnt khook that up, when i turn on my headlights the radio dims. so i must have done something right lol

Thanks for the infos on the green and white/green wires. Also, I don't use the RCA plugs as I don't have any amp.

I'm starting to think that my audio system as been damaged when pulled from my old car. Is there a way to test it without plugging it into a car? I have a 12V battery pack (to boost the car when it doesn't start), can I plug the radio to the battery pack? What is the proper way to do this. At least, I would be sure the radio is OK...

Connect the BATT/IGN leads from the radio (RED and YELLOW) together and connect to the POSITIVE (+) side of the battery pack, then connect the GROUND lead from the radio (BLACK) to the NEGATIVE (-) side of the battery pack. The radio should power up if everything is OK. You can then connect speakers to the speaker out-puts of the radio to check if the out-put is OK (should hear some static or sound from the TAPE/CD/RADIO)

I managed to test my jvc deck on my power pack and it plays fine. So the problem is coming from the car. Maybe the diagrams I got are all wrong. I will borrow a friend's multimeter to know exactly which wires are the constant, acc. and ground. I will let you all know about my success/failure. Thanks again!

Do you still have the original harness connector? Is it a single 14pin connector or does it have a different configuration? You can try and follow one of the pin-outs from this link if you still have the original lay-out at hand. http://www.carstereohelp.net/wireharness_Toyota2.htm

Note they're several pages for typical Toyota radios.

I don't have the original harness connector, but I did manage to isolate the problem. I tested all the wires in the car and the problem is the constant 12V one (blue/yellow). The acc.(grey) (when the ignition key is turned) gives 12V and the ground (brown) seem to be fine. But, no matter what I do, there is no power coming from the constant 12V. So I did test all the other wires to be sure the constant 12V was not misidentified on the diagram I found, with no success. I also re-checked all the fuses and they all are OK. Am I missing something? The previous Toyota OEM radio did work fine. Are there any other fuses somewhere in the car? I am so close to make this work with all your help...

Did you check the fuse in the engine compartment?

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Call me ignorant, I didn't know there was another fuse box in the engine compartment. So all my wiring were good from the beginning. Problem came from the head lamp fuse that was burn. I would never have suspected this fuse provides the power to the constant 12V wire. Thanks a lot to everyone who helped!!!

I had a 94 Tercel for eleven years (192,000km) but sold it in 05 for a Highlander. It was one of the best trouble free vehicle I've ever owned. I can recall some information but it's slowly fading. I gave the shop manual to the buyer, so it's now all from memory. I also replaced the head-unit with a Pioneer CD unit driving 6 1/2 MB Quarts components in the front with Altec Lansing 6x9's in the rear. Great sound overall considering I was only using the head-unit built-in amplifier.
