UK Poor Man's Mp3 Player

I've noticed there's a lot of members looking how to play their MP3s on their tape deck,MP3 playback on a cassette HU is easy & cheap (if you make your own)The other alternatives are to buy a transmitter (not a good idea) or a cassette adapter ($10).So all you need is a stereo cable & jack (cut the ear phones off) & a cassette with all the tape stripped out.MP3 Input must be introduced before the pre-amp of the HU. The best and easiest access to this is the wires that come from the pick up head, you will see RED,WHITE & BLACK. These are the right, left & ground connections.simply SPLICE your wires into the existing ones,(do NOT cut them) That all you need to do.O.K. now you have to fool the player into thinking it's playing a cassette,by inserting the empty cassette into the player you are simply swithing OFF the radio's tuner and allowing the signal to play through the amp.You have not compromised the normal tape function in any way,The sound quallity is excellent & you have all the normal functions e.g. volume, bass, treble ect.,I find it best to adjust the voume of the MP3 Player to about 2 thirds & then adjust the radio to suit, this is because the MP3 Player has it's own pre-amp,and there is plenty of signal power available, which can cause speaker ossilation if set too high. This project can be modified to your own requirements. If you don't want a wire hanging from your set,you can fit a stereo jack socket (then you will need a cable with a male plug at each end,So there you have it,a MP3 Player that has cost you virtually nothing.
Any futher help,(just post me)if you need any data sheets or diagrams I would have to send them by email.Good luck Terry tblo@o2.co.uk

yeah but what happens when you get mp3s with volumes super high. Aftermarket decks usually have filters that can protect against this and doing a poorman's way through a cassette deck isn't always the best way...

Or just buy a wired FM modulator on Ebay for $30

Wiring is simple.. find a ground, and accessory 12v signal wire to turn on the unit.. plug the antenna wire going from the antenna to the headunit into the modulator and then plug the modulator into the antenna port on your head unit..

the modulator has several radio stations to choose from.. select a blank radio station.. and put the selector on the modulator to that radio station..

Run a 2' long RCA to 1/4" headphone jack to your MP3 player or Ipod and tune it to the correct radio station..

Even though you are tuning it on the radio.. the signal coming in is directly coming from you MP3 player.. no signal degradation like you'd see in a tape adapter or through a modulator that sends the signal over the radio

Modulator $27
2' RCA to 1/4 headphone jack - $10 at radio shack...
