Hi everybody. I was wondering where you audiophiles mounted your amps? I'm looking for ideas for a minimially invassive/minimum modification/ secure amp mount. I would like to avoid mounting it upside down for heat dissipation reasons. The same goes for mounting under the passenger seat. I like the idea of running wires along the door sills.
I was thinking amp in the left corner and a sub in the right corner close to the brake lights with some sort of bracket to secure them. Has anyone done this and would care to share? suggestions?
I have:
Alpine cda-9886
Apline spx-17ref
JL Audio 8w3 sealed for SQ
PPI pc-450
I have a feeling this post will be move to the Audio files soon. Nevertheless you should look into getting a D class amp. Then you would be able to mount it anywhere you heart fancies and you won't hafta worry about the heat issues.
I'm actually in the process of putting my system in and it's turning out to be a lot more work than I thought.
As for mounting your amp, maybe secure it to the back of the sub box if possible?
As for running the wires down the door sills, good luck. The stock wiring and wire loom don't leave much room for excess wire. My signal and remote wire seem like they'll fit but there's no room whatsoever for the 4g power wire. My dad used to do tons of system installs back in the day so I'm going to have him help me out and I'll let you know what our solution turns out to be.
^thanks for the replies. I thought about the D class amps but I got the PC450 for free, so that was a major deciding factor. I also havent been able to find a D class with a THD less than 0.1%.
ColdSore. Have you tried fitting the 4ga wire? That would be a bummer if it didnt fit. I have a 4ga wiring kit too. Do you have an installation/project thread on TN? Im pretty much a first-time audio DIY-er, so Im trying to put together some sort of game-plan before starting.
I thought about mounting to the box, but that would mean that the box would not be removable (necessary for snowboarding). I have a 4-channel amp with two channels to be running the fronts and 2bridged into mono for the sub.

There's just no way to fit the 4g wire in there with the wire looms. Maybe if you remove them and mod/break the cable clips it would be possible, but I'm still brainstorming.
I don't have a thread yet, but I may make one after I'm done. Ive done a few installs before in my 94 Rolla and a few friends cars and I try to keep them clean and professional (No wires showing, helped them determine the right wire guage, capacitor, etc. for their system).
You can do some fabricating for a removable amp mount. Maybe google will give you some ideas. I know it's possible and I'm sure it's been done before.
For now I think Im going to mount the amp vertically on the side. I think I could buy some MDF, cut out a slab, mount it to the side, and then mount the amp to that.
I took a peek inside the door sills and it does look tight. The only think I can think of is getting bigger cable clips and squeezing the 4ga into the factory wireloom.

I ended up running the wires underneath the carpet running down the door sill. I wanted to avoid doing this because I didn't want a bulge in the carpet, but the small bulge that it leaves is well hidden by the door sill panels. Just unclip the bottom part of the clip to release the carpet and run along the side. Ill put pictures and stuff in my guide when I make one.
Thanks for the info chancre. For now Im going to hold off on the install until I find a good deal on a jig saw and finish my masters these(due in 2 weeks!). Thats an interesting idea about the carpet, Ill give it a try, and report back.
Hey touring camry. There is enough space on the seat backs but they look kind of soft to me. I didnt think they could support this amp. It feels like 15lbs. I think Im going with the side mount or box mount. We need the fold down to fit snowboards in the wintertime, and the corrolla is tight as is .

The back side of mine has a layer of carpet on top of a layer of metal. It was necessary to first put down a piece of MDF before attaching the amp. I'm sure it would support it though since I've put amps there before.

How is the airflow back there? I was thinking of mounting both of my amps near the rear taillights. Put them at a 35 degree slope on each side and far enough away for light access.
For now I have the amp, HU, wiring, and dash kit. Im just waiting to order the speakers and the sub. I am going to try to figure something out with the amp. I like that seatback idea, but the amp will get destroyed when I throw a wet/frozen snowboard on top of it.
This is what I have:
Alpine cda-9886
PPI PC450 amp (4x50@ 4ohms)
I want to demo the HU on the stock speakers first but afterwards, this is what I am leaning towards.
Alpine SPX-17ref (2x50@ 4ohms front)
JL audio 8w3 (1x200 @ 4ohms bridged rear)
Any feedback or thoughts against this setup? thx in advance
PS. Does anyone know the partnumber for the 09 corolla sail panels. I would really like to order a set just in case.

I haven't had any over heating issues with my amp. However, I'm not running it at full potential either. My amp can put out 160W x 2 full range + 1 x 300W for a subwoofer, these are RMS values, but I'm not using the channel for the sub right now. So the heatsink a bit superfluous for the amount of heat generated.
