How was the headunit connected to the vehicle? Was it running through an adapter harness that split out to a double connector, or did it run through a single connector?

That Previa either ran through the headunit, or through a separate amplifier under the dash (if it had the optional stereo...do you have a bass speaker inside the tailgate...right hand side?). The double connector is the amp bypass, the single connector is meant for unamplified signals from the optional headunit.

If whoever installed the stereo previously ran the Pioneer into the amplifier, it would cut out after a period of time because the input level was too high.
