Hi,
I'd like to install a 2003-2005 6-cd changer/cassette/radio unit such as this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=400075509045)
into my 91 previa w/ 6 and 10 pin connectors (non-premium, no separate amp). Does anyone sell a harness to allow this?
i know there are older options with 6 and 10 pin connectors, but i quite like this unit.
You would need the matching separate JBL amplifier to work with that headunit. The outputs on that one from eBay are only pre-amp outputs. There is no adapter harness that could accomplish this, and all you would get is a faint tinny sound from your speakers.
Any other Toyota headunit (non-JBL) that has a built in amplifier will plug right in. Just be careful as the speakers in your Previa are rated for 15 watts MAX, and most newer Toyota headunits put out at least double that.
Also, by this time, the surround material on your rear speakers will be severely dry-rotted, making them extremely easy to blow. The front ones are made of different material and tend to hold up better, but they are still only cheap paper.

thanks for the warning about the power handling of the speakers, i'll be careful. I've currently got a Fujitsu Ten cd/tape/radio HU from a 2002 Sienna in there.
What vehicle is that first picture from? It doesn't look like it has the normal Toyota outputs or Toyota external amp outputs...
Yea. The front speakers on the 91 are very easy to replace if you blow them, but the rears are a day long and busted-knuckle filled adventure...especially the drivers side one.

That makes sense now. It is another JBL unit. I thought all Toyota's with an external amp used the same connector, but I guess some are different.
The unit in your first post looks like it has the same connector as the factory units that came in my Mom's Avalon (95) and Dad's Previa (93)...which were both before the JBL days...and before 'premium' audio meant anything...
Basically, so long as it does not have JBL written on the front, and you can visually see the 6 and 10 pin connections on the back, it should work. Otherwise it was designed for a separate, and proprietary, amplifier.
Also, keep in mind that the Toyota 6 disc changers (especially if it was made by Delco) are prone to jamming...well any in-dash changer is really. The design of them is rather poor, so be on the lookout for someone trying to sell a jammed unit.

The connectors on the right-hand side of the photos are for power/speaker/illumination, the connectors on the left-hand side of the photos are for steering wheel audio controls/CD changer port. The top photo has the earlier style CD port and the lower photo center connector is the newer style CD port. Only the lower unit has the steering wheel audio control connector (far left connector). Both radios require an external amplifier.
