So I got this decent new stereo for my 99 Corolla CE. I pulled out the stock (AM/FM tape deck), got the new one all wired up with the harness, works fine. Used the original mounting brackets, screwed it in, but the panel cover won't go all the way on. There's about a 1/4" gap at the bottom, and I can't get it closed no matter how hard I push or wiggle the stereo (after loosening the brackets). The problem seems to be that, while the front profile is the same size as the old one, the new unit is about a 1/2 inch deeper, with the holes for the mounting screws pushed about a 1/2 inch further back... in other words, the new stereo wants to stick out of the panel cover, but the panel cover wants it to be flush. I've considered drilling new holes in the new unit to be properly located, but that seems a last resort due to the risk of damaging the unit. I also don't want to file down the edges of the panel cover opening, unless it's the best way. Any ideas??

I have a JVC head unit, and it sticks out about 1/2" further than the stock. I also couldn't get my trim panel to fit properly. I might have to do a DIY as it seems the only way really.... but you are not alone...

a work in progress:
New injector O-Rings, new intake manifold gasket, Tinted tail lights, tinted corner lights, Purple 8500K H4 bulbs, JDM Black headlight housing, Weapon-R CAI.
I'd actually recommend this thing if I could get it to fit-- it supports MP3 & WMA cd's with aux in front and back, decent sound, and got it all for $42.
Additional info, since I posted this in the wrong forum in the first place (sorry mods... I'm on a roll today!):

Never attempt to drill holes in your unit........ if anything...... drill new holes in the bracket.
