Trouble shooting Speakers

Before I buy front speakers I need to make sure that it is indeed an issue with the front speakers. When I turn the balance on the stereo to the front I get nothing out of either speaker. I'm pretty sure the connections on the harness are all good, and even if I got one bad connection it wouldn't knock out both front speakers right? And I know I have the right wires connected. Is there anyway besides plugging another speaker in to test to make the wiring is getting signal. I don't have another speaker to test it with.

One trick I know with guitar/bass speakers to test them is to jump the terminals with a 9 volt battery to make sure the speaker works. Is this alright to do with car speakers too?

you can connect a volt meter set to volts AC to the speaker leads. If you get a reading, there is signal getting to the speakers.

If this suddenly happened to both speakers, I would think it is a headunit issue over the speakers. If they were severely blown you should at least get some crackling noises outta them.

It is not a defect head unit that I know of, as they never worked with the factory head... but then I'm not sure it ever worked right either In fact, we've owned the car for 6-7 years and they've never worked. I will try that then with the voltmeter.
