Question Aftermarket navigation systems...

My folks recently bought a new 2004 Camry, loaded, except my Dad cheaped out and didn't get the factory installed navigation system. He really wanted it, but thought it was too much to spend ON THEIR VERY LAST CAR (jeez, ya can't take it with you!). Anyway, my Mom overheard him telling a friend that there are good aftermarket nav systems for a couple hundred bucks, that he could install himself (he's quite adept with electronics), but he hadn't decided on any one in particular.

His b-day is coming up fast, and my Mom wants to get him one as a gift that he could install before a big road-trip in March.

Any suggestions, and where to buy?

Thanks for any help, y'all!

Mike

A couple of hundred bucks? You better look into the portable handheld ones. Even the Magellan RoadMate 700 sells for $1300. If you want one that actually get installed in the car, it will be around $2000.

I thought he was on something...

Thanks Luc,

After I read your reply I did a search on the web and found a number of different systems that might work for him. I'm sure he wants one he can take from car to car, so portable is best.

Out of all of the units I looked at, the one that really stands out (as far as other users opinions are concerned) for under a grand is the Garmin StreetPilot 2160. I've found it as low as $700.

Anyone have experience with this, or another model they really like, and if so (or not), why?

Thanks again!
Mike

Or, you can get a Pocket PC (ie. HP iPaq) and get a GPS unit with it.
