10" Alpine type R

I need some options. I recently bought a 10in Alpine Type R and a ported enclosure for $140 brand new. Ive had it for about 2.5 weeks now, so its all broken in. The ported box itself is exactly 1.3cu.ft., its what alpine suggested. The only problem i have is that the sub doesnt sound as loud or some times low, like my old 10in. Do you guys think a tuned box and maybe a little bigger box would make a big difference? i know its not gonna hit the low notes as good as a 18in sub or anything, but the lows now sounds wierd.

This is the box i got, pretty cheapo box:

Now if i upgraded to his box, will it sound louder and hit the lows a bit better? and worth the extra money?

how much power are you giving the sub? what is the ported box tuned at?

among the above, box design and build quality make a big difference in how your sub will sound. seeing that it is a prefab box, i would lean more towards the box. i would recommend getting a custom box built for your sub. it is a relatively common sub so finding someone to design a box for you will be easy. i recommend MrMarv who is on a member on here. you can also google him, he has a website with many of his box designs. I have also personally spoken with him on the phone and can say he is a very nice guy.

hey thanks, since its prefab i dont know what its tuned at, but im gussing its pretty high. Im powering it with a JL Audio 500/1 the original slash series. Do you think building a custom box will be cheaper than the one on ebay? Since the one on ebay is tuned to 32hz, so its kinda a custom box.

building a custom ported box will most definitely cost more. The "custom" box on ebay really isnt custom. i would definitely check out Mr Marv's work here: http://community-2.webtv.net/MarvsPlace/MarvsPlace/

too bad you don't have a 12" alpine. Then you can go with this box which is what I have:

http://www.millionbuy.com/hbx121kpro.html

it's 3cf inside which makes a BIG difference! I used to use that same vented box that you're using with a standard 1.75 cf inside volume. My box is tuned to about 33hz, have a soundstream t5-12 in it...fs rating is 26hz
