Opinion on amp rack

I'm building a box that will house an amplifier and I've read around that you shouldn't mount it upside down because it won't dissipate heat as well. Does this apply even after you add a fan inside the box to ventilate it?

yes.

There is a "motherboard" inside of the amp which will absorb most of the heat if upside down. You might be fine with a class D amp upside down though. You might also want to mod a PC 12v fan (they have them at bestbuy now) onto the amp to push air through it. Most of those fans will be ok at 14.5v for quite a while, but if you have problems running them over 12v you can pickup 12V 1A LDO regulators at radio shack for about $1.50 each that will keep the power at a stable 12v.

I've got myself a class A/B amplifier so that's probably going to be a problem for me. I was planning to add a fan to push air around it anyway, but I guess it just won't be enough with this kind of amplifier.. right?

Does your amp have vent holes in it or is it closed solid. That will matter too, on how much ventilation you probably need.

Sorry for being unclear. The box isn't closed, I'm planning to have a push fan on one side and then an opening on the other side.

I mean does your amp physically have holes on the side of it. like vents or so. Some amps are completely sealed on the sides, so the air wont go in your amp and blow the insides if theres no entry way. I'm not saying to make holes in your amp though. Nah mean.

I have an Alphasonik Q2150. It looks like there's vents on the top of it but they don't look too big. There aren't vents on the side I don't think.. its in the mail coming right now so I'll check tomorrow. Does it make a difference and if so, how?

For example, computers, they have fans but have vents, such that air flows on the electronic parts not the shell of the computer. If you cool the shell of the computer, your only cooling one part of the electronics. But the main part is the internal circuitry or electronics. I'm just saying that what good is a computer fan going to do if you have it blowing on the outside(shell), of the amp. It may help reduce some heating, but the heat is actually generated internally from the electronic parts.

I'm just saying it might not be a good idea to mount your amp upside down. I wouln't, because it's not recommended by manufacturers.

I might be making a big issue for your situation, but it's just my thoughts. Good luck!

The way the electronics are designed allows a fin that hangs off to decipate heat when you put it upside down the heat is being decipated right to the part that is supposed to be cooled. If you value your amp Dont do it. Find another place to hang it vertically, that might not be bad but I wouldnt risk putting it upside down myself.

There aren't any fins on this amp though.. I'm most likely not going to hang it upside down but it would make for a cleaner installation if I could.

I am. If you don't feel comfortable doing that I'm sure that a local machine shop could make it look good for a reasonable price. However I actually enjoy voiding warranties.

The fins are not on the amp they are on the parts decipating heat inside the amp.
