Did you check the power leads that are coming into your stereo with a voltmeter? If that is reading ok check the grounds; most newer units will not power on unless it detects a proper ground

First of age has nothing to do with this; just because your 17 does not mean you can use that for a crutch for not knowing something. That being said I would head down to your local library and check out a book on electronics and make sure they cover a voltmeter. The last part would be to actually get your hands on a voltmeter. I do not think you are getting any power to the HU and getting reading on the wires will prove what lines are hot and isolate you power issues

you wont die from this car voltage. It's only 12 volts DC. You'll have some big sparks, if anything but I'm pretty damn sure you wont die or really shocked or anything like that. Only if your hooked up to a pacemaker, then maybe you're at risk. But nah, you should be safe. Just be carefull of what your doing, and you should be good.

If your kit has a testing light, never heard of that but anyways. Look for the power wire, and the ground wire. Two peeps would make it easier so they can turn on the car ignition to acc power. anyways, take the negative side of the light and attach it to the light. then take the positive side of the light and attach the power wire to the light. When I say attach the wire, you just have to have the wire itself contacting the metal part of the positive or negative sides(terminals). Don't quote me on how exactly your kit works, but that's the best guess I can come up with, given the information you provided. good luck!

MMasse, can't believe I'm seeing somebody from IF on here! Nice!

if you were to buy wiring harnesses from a stereo shop, you wouldn't need to do any manual wiring, but that might take all the fun out of it!
the wiring diagram link you posted, only says Toyota and the years, I'm not sure if every model toyota used the same color wires or not, but if the link to the wiring diagram you posted is correct for your car, it'll tell you which colored wires are the always on power, ignition power and ground.

Back to the stereo issue...if you had a voltmeter, which you could prob find a cheap one at walmart or radio shack, $10? found $20 at radio shack (http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2103174) the more you get into the stereos, the more important a volt meter is and i always have one. its as important as a screwdriver to me.
here simple directions using a volt meter to check the power.

there should be two power connections going into your deck. one is always on, to keep help store the time and radio stations in your deck (traditionally a yellow wire), and the other is only one when the ignition is turned to ACC or On (traditionally a red wire). im not sure where the traditional colors come from, but thats what pops into my head. a wiring diagram for your car will tell you exactly what colors your wires are because they might be completely different.
Both of these power wires will need to have around 12 volts. its easy to measure, take the black wire from the volt meter (ground) and touch it against something solid metal. make sure no paint is covering the metal. next take the red wire from the volt meter and touch it to the always on power wire, should read 12 volts. touch it to the ignition power with the ignition in ACC or On and it should read 12 volts. that'll make sure you're getting the correct power to your deck.

also the wiring diagram will tell you the color of the factory ground wire! traditionally, they are black...but it could be any color...

hopefully this helps! id def recommend a volt meter!
