I'm a sealed guy. IMO sealed enclosures give the best SQ. Bandpass, go this route only if you want plain noise with no musical qualities. As for ported, a lot of people are happy with them but I don't go this route as my ears seem to pick up port noise better than most people. Your ears might not be as picky as mine though.

what type of music do you listen to and how loudly do you play it?

Take a quick read of this;
http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/magic/index.html

I only have experience with sealed enclosures. I'd like to give ported a try but cash is tight.

The type of music will definitely dictate what type of box you need, as Phi said (correctly for once). If your music is something like 130 bpm, aka, fast pace, a sealed box would be better to keep the beats in rhythm. If you want the deeper bass, go with a slot-ported box that JL recommends. You'll love the low extension. Bandpass boxes need to be designed very well, since they will only sound great in one range of band. Otherwise, you might as well just give the money to Phi so he can have his ported box.

It depends on the talent of the box builder. Sealed is easier than ported in terms of building but I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between any design if they were all correctly implemented into the system.

It still all comes down to the human touch.

I happen to use a custom built ported box for my setup. But that is because i do SPL competitions and prettuy much you need a ported box or you won't win!

i got a ported enclosure in my wagon and it hits pretty good even when the seat is down and the fact that i'm using a speaker that i got from a junkyard(4yrs ago) that i siliconed back together many times over but it is a pioneer 500watts max 200rms with a salvaged p.g. 500watt amp. just try a ported box but make a plug for it so if you don't like the way it sounds plug it just use mdf
cause i used some wood lying around (it works ) but it flexes a little bit. mdf doesn't.
