I'm trying out LED's for the tail lights in my altezza tail light mods. I'm using 1156 and 1157 LED bulbs, but using PIAA bulbs for the backup bulbs. So far they look pretty bright but that's up close. Not sure how bright they are at a medium distance.
I've seen luxeon bulbs which seem to be brighter than the 12 led bulbs that I'm using. They both use only about 5w as opposed to factory bulbs that use 21/27w.

I was thinking if I put just a single LED bulb in the stock housing, it will look very out of place. I noticed that all the LED tailights all have a row of LEDs. I might have to buy a aftermarket tailight that support LEDs.
I don't think it'll look out of place, maybe just hindered by the stock tail light lens.
My altezza tail light mods have a clear plastic shell covering the red 1156, 1157 housing and clear for the backup lens. The 12 LED bulbs I got for 1157 look pretty cool although to me for now, they don't look as bright as I want them.
My local autozone had 2 1156 and 2 1157 LED bulbs for $17. I figure I'd try them out and if they weren't as bright, I'd order the luxeons from EAutoworks. So far they're bright since I've noticed that people behind me either stop like 2 car lengths back or tail gate me!

the altezza tail light mods for the corolla are clear unlike the factory tail lights which have that dull covering. Switching to the LED bulbs actually make it a lot brighter. Had a coworker check them out and at first glance, I thought that they weren't that bright. Not that I want to shine a super bright light at the drivers behind me, but it seems with the bulbs that came with the Altezza tail lights, they didn't seem that bright and drivers would come up to my bumper like my lights were off or something.
The PIAA bulbs are bright as well but use the same wattage as the factory bulbs...like 21 or 27w. The LED and luxeon bulbs use like 3 or 5w.
the PIAA 1156 bulbs for the backup lights are super bright! They're like a bright pair of headlights for the back when I put it in reverse!!

LEDs are addictive. I try to find places where I change them to LED.
yep! true that! I changed my dome light to a blue LED light so instead of the factory offwhite look, it's got a luminous blue!
I'm thinking of changing the front parking lights and bumper lights to LED. My front bumper/signal lights are using the 1156 PIAA bright white bulbs tho...

I just changed my LED bulbs for the brake/stop lights back to newer PIAA bulbs since I noticed the altezza taillight assembly have red reflective areas around where the bulbs poke through so I think the LED's weren't that bright to begin with since they only have lights on the tip and not the surrounding areas.
The newer PIAA bulbs seem to be brighter than the LED's, but I'm keeping them as backup if the PIAA's burn out.
