Amp Install

I just bought a 09 camry LE and was looking to install a system. I was wondering where I could run my wire through. I have a 0guage so it is a little complicated. I looked up previous forums where many have ran it from the passenger side but none from the driver side firewall. It seems like the passenger side will not work for my 0 gauge so was wondering if anyone ran it from any openings on the driver side. Pics would be really helpful...thanks.

there should be a rubber grommet on the driver's side, otherwise you'll have to drill a hole.

Mounting the amp underneath the driver's seat is risky because there's very little space for where the heat should dissipate and your amp will tend to go into protection mode because of the heat. Best place to mount it is usually on the back of the rear seat and the ground bolt can be right on the back of the seat.

The amp should never be mounted on the sub box because the vibrations from the sub will surely damage the components of the amp.

This is the procedure I used on my 09 Corolla. I don't know if things are the same on the Camry, but I thought I would write it down here. I figured it couldn't hurt - you can always ignore it, but maybe there is something useful in here for you.

I used the rubber groment on the driver's side which had other wires running through it. It is hard to find.

Find a rubber gromet on the passenger side firewall which has nothing going thru it. It has two small cylinder shaped "nipples" on it. I found I couldn't really access the passenger side one so, I used the same grommet on the drivers side.

You have to use a flashlight and look down under some stuff sticking out and a little to the right of the engine. You identify the grommet by seeing a cylinderical rubber nipple. Try to mark approximate location with masking tape to help refind it.

It is really tough to find the gromet inside the car.

I cut off the end of the cylindrical rubber nipple on the engine side and put a straightened-out coat hanger through the hole in the nipple most of the way. With that done you can locate the hanger dangling under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Then you can find the grommet by following the hanger up to the firewall gromet and mark with maskig tape.

The amp wire doesn't go through the cylindrical nipple. The amp wire goes through the unused space on the lower gromet. I think I removed the coat hanger to drill a hole close by. I used a 1/4" bit and electric drill to go through the gromet from inside the car. Be carefull not to nick any wires - I did not have any problems. Push the amp power cable through the drilled hole and feed wire through to engine side. Route wire to battery, install fuse and enclose wire with corregated vynal tubing for protection.

that's why I have someone else go under the dash to find the grommet and install the power wire. I get claustrophobic!

I located the grommet, but it seems to small for a 0awg to fit. From the engine side it seems to crowded, and its hard to even get a hand to it. did any of you actually remove the grommet and then stick the wire through or got it through some other way? Also the passenger side grommet is easy to access from the engine side but cant seem to see it from the inside of the car. there is some sort of black cover blocking it. Would it be easier to run the wire through there and would it fit? Also any spots for a good ground?

is the amp grounded properly?? Is the remote turn on wire connected to the amp?? If it doesn't power on, the remote turn on wire wasn't connected. If everything powers on but no sound, it could be that the grounding wire isn't bolted tightly.

what about your gain settings on the amp?? don't crank it all the way up. It has to be set at or around the preamp voltage rating of your head unit.

So where did you go with the power wire? I am having the same problem right now. I stared at the firewall for what felt like an hour trying to find a spot to run my 0 gauge as well. Thanks!

I put up a writeup with photos (at the link below) on running a 4-ga amp power wire through an 09 Corolla firewall wire gromet on the drivers side which may be usefull to you. I not sure how much bigger diameter O-ga is, so I can't say it would fit, but there was still more room in the gromet with 4-ga wire installed.
