Well this is a carry over from my post asking how to get the dash off. Thanks for your help, I finally got it out. ONLY to find out the 4" speakers I bought won't fit in that stupid mount. Well, they DO fit, but in the bottom half of it where the sound will be muted. Then I notice that the stock speakers aren't even really 4", they're more like 3 1/2"! The bottom half is the one that takes 4" speakers. There was some plastic thing keeping the space full. My speaker fits there, but like I said, it's facing down at metal and is muted.
How do I mount this new speaker? I tried flipping the mount around, taking it apart. Even tried thinking maybe I can just force it into place, but nah. I need some serious help.
Oh, I'm taking pictures this time so you can see what I mean. Check back in a few minutes.
OK. Here are the pictures. First, here's the speaker mount.
As you can see, two spots for speakers. Here is a picture of the two speakers in the spots they fit. The top one is the factory speaker, the bottom one is obviously the one I'm trying to install.
Now here's a picture comparing the two speaker sizes.
Here's a picture of the chasis behind the dash's face.
Now with me holding the mount to the chasis, the way it's supposed to fit.
And now the speaker mount in the chasis.
In conclusion, this sucks. Do I need to somehow build my own speaker mount? Or maybe there are mounts for sale. I need help.
THanks for the reply, but you must not have read the whole post. I'm not trying to fit my old factory speakers into that big hole on the mount. The problem is my new speakers don't fit into the smaller hole, yet fit fine in the larger one. That would be all well and good if the larger hole didn't face down at a metal unvented part of the dash.
Yeah, the bottom thing is a passive woofer. dont really know what good it does, but chances are you arent going to be able to get those 4's in the right spot.
but have you installed the 4's yet in that postion? does the sound really differ that much? you might want to install them the way you have and see if it really sounds muffled. There isnt anything you can buy to put speakers there, but you can always fab something yourself. ah the joys of owning a camry.
or, theres my solution. Rip those crappy ass goodfor nothin 3.5" speakers out of there, and make some kick panels and put some 6.5's down at your feet. just a thought.

Yeah, I all ready tried installing the 4" speaker where the passive woofer was and it was incredibly muffled.
Making my own kick panels sounds interesting. I like the idea of having another pair of 6.5" speakers in the front But I have no idea how to do these things. I'm pretty new to car-fi. It would be cool to install them in the door like you guys did.
If you can give me a link to some tutorial on modifying doors to fit speakers or something, that'd be great.
Hey, I ran into the same problem as you did and wish I saw this thread sooner. It's nearly impossible to fit 4" speakers into the stock 3.5" enclosure, even if I try to dremel the hole bigger the speaker would still go off the edge of the enclosure. I think my advice to anyone that's upgrading front speakers on their gen2 is either get 3.5's if you just want something to fit in the stock enclosure, or else you're better off building custom kickpanels to equip some 6.5s.
Here's the infamous stock enclosure with the 4" plastic passive woofer.
What it looks like with the 4" speakers mounted at the passive woofer location, which is useless since the lower dash will be completely covering it once it's put back on.
What i did learn is that the fake passive woofer does work fairly well in enhancing the bass from the little 3.5 speakers. Looks like i'll be returning these speakers for 3.5s, since at least the passive woofers would still be functional with that size. I'd build custom door kickpanels if i knew how or if someone could provide some step-by-step instructions.
Btw Puma Man, how'd you take off that mount to the enclosure in the 5th picture? Would be possible assemble it back the other way so that the 4" hole will be facing up instead?

Wow, it's been a while. I forgot about this thread I've since just forgotten about replacing the front speakers for now. I was thinking about modding the doors to fit 6.5 speakers, but I'm going in the air force in like 2 months and will be selling this car. Not worth it.
Anyway, in answer yo your question. No, I couldn't just flip the mount upside down. It could only fit in that ONE way.
Oh yeah, let me know what 3.5's you got and where. I might just buy a new pair of those for now.

I'm still thinking whether or not if I should wait and learn how to make the kickpanels. But the 3.5's I was planning to get are the Infinity Reference 3002CF since they have pretty good highs and clarity compared to other speakers at the same price. The only thing I'm concerned about of these speakers is the clearance between the tweeter and the dash since it does stick out a bit. The cheapest I've found them for online is at www.discountjungle.net and Circuit City sells them as well.
