92 Previa Repair or Replace

My 92 Previa LE has the factory am/fm cassette and the optional cd deck in it. The only thing that works is the radio so I can use my iphone for tunes, but would like cd (just doesn't play) and cassette (just clicks away prob. the belt) service again.

The dealer can send it away to the mfr for a quote (at no charge, but typical repairs are $200) and I found a local shop (http://www.extremedreamsautomotive.com/ Aldegrove BC) that can do repairs as well ($50 for quote, applies to the repair if I go ahead). Dealer or local indie for the repairs, any recommendations?

There are no wreckers with CD decks in my area. I have a spare am/fm cassette deck to test so might have a spare.

What other Toyota CD decks and HU's will fit, attach with out hassle, work , sound good and not blow the existing speakers. We are very happy with the stock system sound.

The rear speakers grills are installed but no sound comes out, so I'm assuming the rear 5 1/4's are rotten.

In big cities the IPhone FM adapter (Griffin itrip) gets way too much interference to use. If I disconnect the antennae some how with a switch will it improve my sound? or Can I get an auxilary audio in some how to use the headphone jack ?

I was thinking the repairs will come to around $220, the price of a new deck but I want to keep the video from the iphone working, new decks disable the iphone vid. Plus the stock deck has lasted 18 years not bad.

video, durability and flash

Agreed, eyes on the road at all times, but we live on a small island in the gulf. The ride on the ferry is usually when we watch our vid podcast.

The situation with the new HU's is the flash they have. Looking for a plain black HU with durable controls. Don't really see that at any price, but definitely not in the $200 - 300 price range.

Also reading on this list and other audio lists the fine tuning for crossovers and matching speakers to HU is not in my time zone. I still have to get the sound dampening done and with only 88 days till departure, I can't. dude you should see the todo list for a three month road trip. I still need to get need glasses...
