Need advice on Gen 2 camry rear speakers.

I have two Infinity Referance 6.5's in the back of my Gen 2 Camry. The Stock speaker mounts seem a little to small and rattle to much. Any advice on this? also anyone who knows how to/has built a Custom type deck in the back for 6x9inch speakers. Thank you advice would really be appreciated.

The stock speaker is part of the mount. You can cut away the stock speaker and mount the 6.5's in its place.

Another way to mount the 6.5's is to modify the speaker grill. You replace the top part of the grill with a thin piece of wood (1/4" or so) and mount the 6.5's to that.

Remove the rear deck and use it as a template.

Use plywood or mdf (thickness is up to you, but 1/4" is good), cut the holes for the 6x9's, then cover the deck (carpet, vinyl, etc..)

Thanks, the previous owner of this car had already installed some alpine speakers that were probably from 1992 or 93 so I did not have to deal with that, do you have any pictures of your rear grill or know of anybody who does??

ke2urhoe48, how'd you get your Infinity Reference 6.5 speakers to fit in the rear mounts? I have the 6002i Reference 6.5 speakers in my rear and the mounting bracket doesn't quite line up and reach the stock holes for the screws. The speakers fit okay but I could only secure the speakers with 2 screws.

Btw, has anyone tried or know if 4" speakers will fit into the front mounts that currently holds the 3.5? I'm planning on replacing the front speakers next on my gen2 and unsure if 4" speakers will fit.

Edit: In reply to the front speakers, Yes the 4" fit.
You have to modify the boxes the 3.5" are in though
Get a dremel and cut the holes bigger, and then drill new holes in the plastic box to mount the 4". If the hole is big enough the 4" slide right in, I did this as a temp, it looks like crap so I'm taking all the audio equip out and starting fresh.

Unfortunately the rear speaker mounts of mine were too bent to be used again. I'm still trying to figure out a way to fit the better speakers in. I bought a bunch of audio equip to install, which is almost all installed. I got more performance orriented recently and now it is on the side line. Me go fast!

Heres an idea that i've actually used before on a gen 2 that came into the shop that I use to work at.

1. Remove the top half of the speaker grill. Just pop off the 4 little circular clips (refer to the pics I posted) on the underside of the grill. Then pop the top half of the grill out.

2. Use the top half of the grill (the piece you popped out) as a template and trace it out onto a piece of 1/4" plywood or mdf.

3. Cut out a hole for your new speaker, mount the speaker to the backside of the piece of wood, and cover the whole thing with grill cloth.

You can also mount the speaker to the top of the piece of wood if you want.

4. After you get it mounted the way you want, drop it back into the other part of the stock speaker grill.

You'll want to glue the piece down and/or use some really small screws to secure the piece.

I used liquid nails (we have a bunch of it around the shop).
