I guess my vote for 'install it yourself' is not very popular.

You know, installing an alarm is not much different than doing a stereo install... except the wires aren't laid out nicely in a harness, all in one place.

IMO stereos (headunits) are way easier to install. Especially if you use a wiring harness.

Theres alot more wires with a alarm. Also finding the right wires to tap into can be a pain in the ass.

I've installed many alarms, but then again I use to be a installer.

tapping the wrong wire can put your car (temporarily) out of commision. just cough up the $100 for install, its better than being stuck with your car not starting or something else fucking up

I'll give you credit for seeking help before you started, wether you choose to use the overwhelming response, that is your choice. Just figure the cost to have it towed to a shop, how long it'll take to get fixed, and what your gonna drive in the meantime, if you cut the wrong wire, or short out something. Alarms are way more complicated than stereo installs. I'd recommend asking someone that has tried to install one themselves what it intails. Again good luck

that's 20 beer at the bar... but its ok, i'm gonna install one in my room mates's truck for a case of beer

i can't fucking believe this thing worked, connected a couple wires and she fired right up, the hood switch dosen't work though, i tried unplugging and plugging my battery back up and she didn't start

tomorrow i'll be wiring the door locks to the remote

and yes i'm making pretty decent cash, 11-1200 a month, i'm used to living off 600 so this is gold!! i even bought a 300$ snowmobile today

i got a question to those that have remote starters though, have you ever had the remote go off accidentally in your pocket ?and find your car running

i'd much rather spend 80$ and a couple hours work than have to go out and start my car 10 minutes before i go to work everyday, we get weeks and weeks of -40 mornings here

its just one button...

i'm kinda paranoid, i've never had a car that had an fob, the package says that it has 800ft range too, this scares me, i might bump it and it'll run all day, or unlock my doors so the riff-raff can get in there

Is the switch grounding out properly? And is the plastic part of the switch getting pressed down all the way when the hood is closed?

The wires for the door lock/unlock are in the passenger side kick panel.

lock: blue/white wire
unlock: lt. green/red wire

Edit: Door lock/unlock use a negative trigger.

One of the wires is wrong, I forget which one. Some probing with a DMM should find the correct wires.

You have to hold down the button for a couple seconds with most remote starts. So I don't think you'll have that problem.

nope my remote starter never went off in my pocket. the one i have, it requires 2 presses of the same button, both within 1 sec to start the car. however to lock or unlock the car, it's only 1 button push to do (different buttons of course to lock or unlock), and it never really locked or unlocked when the starter was in my pockets. so nothing to worry about

I've installed a few remote starters/alarms.

First of all, I have to say Haynes is one of my best pals. Second I HATE cutting into an existing car harness.

So what to do? I usally pay a visit to the junk yards and cut the wiring harness plugs off of a similar vehicle (both the male & female ends) then I wire the plugs together making an adapter of sorts with the wiring from the item I'm installing. Then when I'm ready it is a simple matter of just "plugging in" your car alarm or remote starter/lock sytem right into the stock harness.

If for some reason the wiring is not as it should be, you simply unplug your "adaptor" and your wiring is back as it should be. (with a minimal possibility of any major damage)

I find that installs this way are a lot easier because you arn't in any uncofortable positions for way too long. (It's way harder to trace appropriate leads with a door sill in the middle of your back) Your installs are much more refined and professional. Last if you sell your car it's much easier to take your favorite toys out without leaving an electrical mess behind.
